VFACTS: December 2025 new car sales results for Australia

December VFACTS figures are out for 2025 so we can see what were the best-selling cars in Australia for the year. Tesla and Polestar do not report sales to VFACTS, so for this report those sales are excluded (aside from a special mention in the overall brands leaderboard just below).

Firstly, in the month of December there were 98,744 sales (new vehicle registrations) according to VFACTS, which is up 3.0 per cent on last December. And then across the year (YTD) there were 1,209,808 sales, down 0.9 per cent compared with 2024.

As for the most popular new vehicle brands, Toyota remains at the top both for the month and for the year. Quite easily, actually. But further down the top 10 we see some reshuffling of other brands, with MG dropping from 7th in 2024 to 10th in 2025, while BYD jumps into the list at number 8.

2026 Toyota Australia lineup

Moving into the best-selling vehicles in Australia in December and for 2025, the Toyota RAV4 crossed the line as the most popular for the month. The Ford Ranger, however, was the best-selling vehicle in 2025, and that’s now the third consecutive year at the top for the versatile ute.

Other interesting findings in the top 10 for December, the BYD Sealion 7 jumped straight into fourth spot, while the GWM Haval Jolion joined the ranks in number seven, with the Chery Tiggo 4 in ninth. It’s pretty clear to see some Chinese brands are creeping up. However, we see this with MG a year or two ago. Will these other brands be able to maintain strength? Let’s keep an eye on it in 2026.
