2024 Toyota Kluger GXL 2.4 Turbo review (video)

The ‘SUV large below $80k’ segment in Australia has increased in popularity by 12.1 per cent so far this year (through April, according to VFACTS figures). Go-anywhere, separate chassis entrants such as the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X and Toyota’s own Prado seem to be the new default choice on account of their improved refinement while still presenting heavy-duty off-road performance, but car-platform-based crossovers such as the evergreen Kluger still account for a large portion of the segment.

With 2826 units moved to the end of April (YTD), the Kluger is pipped by the Kia Sorento (3606) despite the newfound availability of a hybrid option with the US-sourced Toyota. We borrowed the mid-range GXL to see whether it still has the credentials to stand out in a segment with some 23 entrants screaming for your hard-earned dollar.

2024 Toyota Kluger GXL: How much does it cost?

At $65,310, the mid-range GXL is quite a big ask for a mid-tier large SUV. The more generously-priced GX starts at around $10k less, with the flagship Grande now a jaw-dropping $80k.

Some could rightfully argue the GXL’s price tag is justified through its extensive array of features, including advanced safety technologies and a decent interior. Moreover, Toyota’s Service Advantage ensures affordability in the long run, capping the first five services at a mere $265 each, scheduled every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.

This approach underscores Toyota’s reputation for delivering not just a robust product but also a cost-efficient ownership experience. To find a breakdown of Kluger’s servicing cost, including visits beyond the capped-price period, check Toyota’s calculator here.

2024 Toyota Kluger GXL: Interior & packaging

With dimensions measuring 4966mm in length, 1930mm in width, and 1755mm in height, Kluger exudes a commanding presence on the road, further enhanced by a generous 207mm of ground clearance that not only contributes to mild off-road capability but also facilitates easier access and exit.

The cabin’s centrepiece is a 12.3-inch touch-screen display, a noticeable upgrade from the 8.0-inch screen found in the GX model. This system boasts integrated satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with no interruptions to connectivity during our time.

The instrument display impresses with its crisp visuals, while the steering wheel controls offer impressive functionality, allowing drivers to easily alternate between media seek and fine frequency adjustment – one of multiple examples of great ergonomics that also includes volume and track knobs, easy-to-adjust climate control and intuitive controls.

The GXL’s interior dimensions provide ample room inside, ensuring comfort for all occupants. The third row offers decent room for adults, whereby only very long trips might expose limitations. There are also climate vents in the ceiling for all three rows of seats.

Leather seats are standard, complementing the premium feel of the cabin – which also extends to the driver-centric dash design, and most, if not all touch points. Boot space varies between 241L to 1150L when the rear row is folded.

Additional features enhancing the experience include Toyota’s Safety Sense system, which incorporates advanced safety technologies like pedestrian and cyclist detection, intersection monitoring, and lane keep assist.

These features, along with seven SRS airbags, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a comprehensive suite of connected services accessible via the myToyota Connect app, all contribute to its five-star ANCAP rating – the report for which can be found here.

While all numerical ANCAP scores are high, a centre head airbag is not available. Can you use the 2024 Toyota Kluger for Uber? Yes, it meets the criteria thanks to its five-star ANCAP rating.

2024 Toyota Kluger GXL: Powertrain & handling

Powering the Kluger GXL is the ‘T24A-FTS’ 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (similar to what powers the Lexus RX 350 and 500h F Sport) that aims to offer improved economy over its lusty 2GR V6 predecessor, with prodigious low-down turbo torque.

Generating 196kW at 6000rpm and 420Nm of torque from 1700rpm to 3600rpm (from 218kW/350Nm in the old V6), this engine provides smooth, responsive acceleration, making the Kluger feel effortless in various driving scenarios. You can tell Toyota has gone to great lengths to make it sound good, but it is never as sweet and free-revving as its six-cylinder predecessor.

Connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, power delivery is always seamless and contributes to the vehicle’s impressive fuel consumption rating (for its size) of 8.5L/100km. Those who require more frugality, or cover more kilometres might be more impressed at the 5.6L/100km figure in the hybrid version. Weighing in at 1940kg (tare), with towing capacities of 2000kg braked and 700kg unbraked, the Kluger GXL is as practical as it is powerful, for a crossover-style model in this class.

Thankfully, the Kluger’s 68-litre fuel tank accepts regular 91-grade unleaded. At the time of writing, the cheapest fuel in metropolitan Sydney is $1.99/L, meaning a total refill cost of $135.79. Against an official rating of 8.5L/100km, we saw figures around the 10.6L/100km mark, even under heavy driving. This is impressive for a 1940kg, seven-seat vehicle which can tow up to two tonnes.

For an SUV of this size, visibility is always excellent, meaning car parks are eminently navigable, with a respectable 11.4m turning circle. The solidity and confidence inspiring nature of the chassis even encourages you to push it through twisty roads, revealing a flat and composed character.

The stiffness of the TNGA chassis means an extremely firm suspension tune wasn’t required to achieve decent dynamics, with a pleasing trade-off in terms of ride quality. In saying that, we’d love to see Toyota do a GR or GR Sport Kluger in the future.

2024 Toyota Kluger GXL: Key attractions/reasons to buy

  • Effortless connectivity: With its 12.3-inch touch-screen offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Toyota has come a long way from its formerly sub-par infotainment systems.
  • Confidence-inspiring dynamics: Although softer riding than some rivals, such as the Sorento, the Kluger’s TNGA-K platform and precise steering provide an engaging and confident driving experience.
  • Comprehensive safety features: Toyota’s Safety Sense system is well integrated and works very well in Australian conditions, without being overzealous or annoying.
  • Interior space and practicality: As ever, the latest Kluger is huge inside and perfectly suited to a big family.

2024 Toyota Kluger GXL: Key considerations before you buy

  • Lacks V6 charm: The new 2.4L turbo four-cylinder engine, while smooth, doesn’t quite capture the charisma of the older 2GR V6 models.
  • Premium pricing: The GXL’s advanced features and technology come at a premium, potentially out-of-reach price for some buyers.
  • Hybrid is the pick for efficiency: The most impressive fuel efficiency figures are exclusive to the hybrid model, leaving this standard engine trailing in terms of eco-friendliness. The hybrid is around $3000 more for the equivalent trim grade.

Its combination of handy technology, comfortable and spacious interior, torquey powertrain, and solid handling positions it as a top choice for families, with enough engagement to mean enthusiasts aren’t feeling like they are getting the rough end of the stick.
