2024 Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure V8 review (video)

There aren’t many V8s left on the market. But, fortunately, at least one remains. This is the Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure V8. If any vehicle needs to retain a V8, it’s this gloriously massive and majestic machine. It’s a perfect fit.

In Extended Wheelbase (EWB) form, the Bentayga aims to redefine luxury in the SUV segment by marrying living room space wrapped up in meticulous craftsmanship and power. It also targets discerning customers who prioritise interior indulgence and perhaps back-seat travel above driving.

2024 Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure: How much does it cost?

Since there are not many rivals in this space, in terms of being an extended platform, we have to say the Bentayga EWB is reasonably priced, despite starting from $515,000 in Azure trim. You can also drop the Azure pack and step down to the bargain basement $455,700 regular EWB.

Looking around the market, the nearest competitors would have to be the 420kW Rolls-Royce Cullinan (from $705,000), but then less directly the performance-focused models such as the 520kW Aston Martin DBX707 (from $462,500), the 533kW Ferrari Purosangue (from $728,000), and the 588kW Lamborghini Urus SE (from $457,834).

As you can see, most of these are either a lot more expensive, or more focused on speed and power. In many ways the Bentley blends the perfect mix; it’s still incredibly fast – including around corners – but also very comfortable and relaxing when you need it to be. In that sense, the very top-end Range Rover modes are perhaps the only true competitor in terms of blending performance and luxury like this.

2024 Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure: Interior & packaging

At the heart of the Bentayga EWB’s appeal is undoubtedly its interior. The extended wheelbase adds 180mm to the wheelbase which results in just as much extension to the rear cabin and legroom. There’s even bespoke extra-long rear doors to better present the rear seat area.

Compared with traditional long wheelbase luxury vehicles, often sedan-based models, the Bentayga EWB is more welcoming in that the seat height is perfectly matched to your hip. Compared with something like a Rolls-Royce Ghost, you do not need to bend down at all to get in. And to get out, simply swivel your legs around and your feet align with the ground.

Three seating configurations are available with the EWB, including a new 4+1 layout, ensuring versatility for both chauffeur-driven and owner-driven scenarios. And then you have the exquisite Airline Seat Specification, as featured here.

As the name suggests, the Airline Seat offers a truly pampering travel experience, with completely independent, 22-way electric-adjustable chairs which include a 40-degree Relax Mode for pure comfort. There’s also auto climate sensing and advanced postural adjustment, and amenities such as a deployable footrest (passenger side only), heated armrests, and air ionisers. This is the specification to go for if you are planning to spend most of your time sitting in the back.

Craftsmanship shines through every detail. From the Bentley Diamond Illumination, which emits ambient lighting through perforated leather, to the fine stitching and veneer overlays, the EWB’s interior is a testament to Bentley’s commitment to luxury and attention to detail. Additionally, over 24 billion trim combinations are available during order, ensuring that no two cabins are alike.

Speaking of options, there are plenty of them so you can fully personalise your vehicle from the factory. Yes, some of the options are very expensive, but if you’re in the market for a vehicle like this, the word ‘expensive’ probably isn’t in your vocabulary.

But for entertainment’s sake let’s list some of the standouts. You can opt for the Blackline Specification which adds gloss black grille and trimmings for $11,555. Or what about the Bentayga Styling Specification for $26,849, or the hand cross stitching with contrast by Mulliner for $14,279. But the best of all are the paint colour options. The most expensive of which is the Satin Mulliner Personal Commission – basically any colour you like – for $65,637.

Boot space is measured at 484L in the EWB, which is the same as the regular Bentayga. It is fully enclosed with the Airline Seat package, which means you can’t fold down the seat for more boot space.

2024 Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure: Powertrain & handling

Now, I know what you’re thinking. This is going to ride like a dream but handle like a pavlova. Well, you’d be wrong. Underpinning the Bentayga is the same MLB Evo platform as seen under the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne. It’s not mucking around. This is a serious foundation.

So even though the kerb weight is 2514kg, it steers in like a much smaller and lighter vehicle. Also helping with this is what can only be described as a magic suspension system, Bentley Dynamic Ride. It incorporates 48V active anti-roll control (a first of its kind, in the world), with constant and automatic adjustments balancing between a plush ride and body management and stability.

Bentley also introduced Electronic All Wheel Steering with the EWB, which helps tightened the wheelbase during slower speed corners and parking, but then it virtually lengthens the wheelbase during higher speed driving to help increase stability.

Specifically, the all-wheel steering system reduces the turning circle by 7 per cent compared with the standard Bentayga, so now it’s 11.8 metres. Out on a nice windy road, up in the mountains, for example, it glides between corners beautifully. It is a genuine pleasure to drive, despite its size and weight.

The ride is equally astonishing. The Azure variant features adaptive air suspension, so it literally floats over road surfaces with the grace of a prima ballerina. But you can toggle between drive modes to transform the character. Comfort mode provides a serene, luxurious ride but can feel overly soft on undulating Australian country roads. The default ‘B’ mode, however, strikes an excellent balance for everyday use. Sport mode sharpens the dynamics, unleashing a more spirited driving experience.

But what also helps with driving pleasure is the masterpiece under the bonnet. This 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is one of the finest V8 engines ever made in our opinion, and is also seen on shows such as the Audi SQ7, Porsche Cayenne, and Lamborghini Urus, with different tuning and tweaks between them.

Here, it produces 404kW of power at a melodious 6000rpm, accompanied by a hefty 770Nm of torque spanning from 2000-4500rpm. While this might be a slightly milder state of tune for the ‘hot-vee’ configuration, it feels tailor-made for the Bentayga’s persona. With the turbochargers nestled within the V for optimal response, a relatively high compression ratio of 10.1:1 (for a turbo engine), and advanced twin-scroll turbocharging and direct injection, this powertrain is very sharp and responsive, and bellows out almighty performance.

Press the accelerator and you’re greeted by a rich, deep V8 growl as the immense torque propels you and your passengers forward effortlessly. The soundtrack isn’t loud, but still a symphony of metallic resonance and sheer authority, climbing the rev range with intensity before culminating in a crescendo worthy of the finest operatic performances. It’s proper exhilarating.

The V8 pairs seamlessly with the renowned ZF 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission, which channels power to an active full-time four-wheel-drive system. This system can dynamically allocate torque to the wheels with the most grip when necessary. For an SUV like this, the gearbox feels ideal; it balances silky smoothness with responsive and swift shifts. While a dual-clutch might offer quicker shifts, it would likely sacrifice the Bentayga’s hallmark refinement.

During performance testing on a private road with a Vbox, we recorded a 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.22 seconds, surpassing the official claim of 4.5 seconds. The 0-200km/h dash took 14.91 seconds, and the quarter mile covered in 12.47 seconds at 184.3km/h. These figures are remarkable for a vehicle of this weight and character. If you’re wondering, we’ve previously timed the Azure V8 non-EWB across 0-100km/h in 3.97 seconds and 0-200km/h in 14.76 seconds – a minor sacrifice for the added weight and passenger space.

As for stopping power, the brakes are just as extraordinary as the rest of the vehicle. It boasts some of the largest steel brake discs ever fitted to a production car; 400mm at the front, gripped by six-piston calipers. Optional customisation is available for those who wish to personalise this setup.

2024 Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure: Key attractions/reasons to buy

  • Unmatched rear comfort: With features like the Airline Seat Specification and advanced wellness-focused technologies, the EWB is heaven for rear passengers.
  • Exquisite craftsmanship: Bentley’s attention to detail is evident in every stitch, veneer, and innovative lighting fixture.
  • Dynamic performance: The EWB retains the spirited handling of the standard Bentayga, and only fractionally slower across the usual sprints (3.97s vs 4.22s for 0-100km/h, DE tests).
  • Endless customisation: With literally billions of trim combinations, and loads of other personalisation avenues to go down, buyers can create a truly bespoke vehicle.

2024 Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure: Key considerations before you buy

  • Price premium: The EWB commands a significant premium over the standard Bentayga, making it an investment for the ultra-wealthy only.
  • Competitor landscape: Rivals like the Range Rover SVAutobiography offer a similarly compelling package for less money. But in terms of the exotic brands, the Bentayga price is neatly positioned.
  • Do rear-seat drivers exist in Australia? In Australia, being driven around isn’t much of a thing, even for the super-rich. In that regard, does the EWB make sense if you’re going to drive it yourself?

Final word

The Bentley Bentayga EWB is a remarkable achievement in automotive luxury, combining fine British craftsmanship, pampering luxury, and exhilarating dynamic driving capability. But will you be sitting in the back or driving? Because if you enjoy driving you might as well stick with the non-EWB.
