What were the best-selling cars in Australia in 2024? Let’s check out the December VFACTS report and find out. This report is compiled by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, and counts new vehicle registrations for all makes and models except Tesla, Polestar and Mahindra (and some other newly-arrived brands).
Overall, we can see there were 95,895 new registrations in December (we’ll call them sales), which is down 2.7 per cent on December 2023 efforts. For the entire year, the tally stands at 1,220,607, which is up 0.3 per cent compared with the year 2023. This is an all-time record for yearly sales in Australia.
Although it was a record year, the FCAI is concerned about the future trajectory, which isn’t so rosy. Tony Weber, FCAI chief, said the second-half of 2024 saw sales dropping to very low levels, with high interest rates and high cost of living stresses to blame. Weber said:
“Customers are also increasingly making choices regarding environmental outcomes and the associated total cost of ownership of moving to low emissions technologies. So, while the sales of battery electric vehicles are lower than expected, this is offset to a degree by an increasing number of buyers turning to hybrid and plug-in hybrid models which make up 14.1 per cent and 1.9 per cent of the total market respectively.”
Speaking of which, the government is putting a lot of pressure on car brands to make more EVs, basically. And up until now such pressures have mainly been applied in big markets such as USA and Europe. But as of January 1, 2025, car brands here in Australia have to adhere to our new New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.
However, if buyers continue to show little interest in EVs, the new policies are likely to cause car brands to raise their vehicle prices even more to pay for any penalties incurred by their vehicles that do sell (the non-EVs). Weber said:
“The industry is responding to NVES by increasing the range of zero and low emission vehicles on offer. However, a continuation of current customer buying preferences will inevitably lead to the accrual of substantial penalties under the Government’s new scheme, which will create price inflation within the new vehicle market.
“If consumers do not want, cannot afford or cannot find new low emission vehicles that meet their needs, then no amount of effort from governments and car makers will make a difference.”
According to the VFACTS report – which no longer includes Tesla and Polestar, don’t forget – fully electric vehicle sales hit 74,612 units. That’s down 14.5 per cent on 2023. However, adding Tesla and Polestar results in a total figure of around 91,000, which would be a slight increase on 87,217 units in 2023.
It’s not a big jump considering all of the incentives that aim to push buyers into EVs, the slashed prices for many EVs in recent times, and the sheer influx of new EVs hitting the market.
Let’s get stuck into the most popular new vehicle brands, and no surprises here, Toyota is in front. It reported 18,657 sales in December, down 3.2 per cent on last December. It crosses the line as the most popular brand for the entire year once again, with 241,296 (about 1 in 5 new cars sold is a Toyota), up a whopping 12.1 per cent on 2023 efforts.

There we have it, it was a record year of sales overall, with some interesting trends coming and going. It seems large luxury SUVs are on the rise in popularity, mid-size sedans are dropping, and utes remain a big favourite. It will be interesting to see what 2025 brings, with more and more brands to be introduced and some interesting new utes.
