In a market segment crowded with contenders vying for the attention of budget-conscious consumers, the 2024 MG ZST Essence is one of the prominent players.
The ZS currently commands an impressive 15.7% segment share in Australia to the end of April 2024, according to VFACTS; it is the best-selling small SUV on the market. A blend of cost-effectiveness and feature-rich packaging are no doubt the key selling factors.
Boasting dimensions of 4323mm in length, 1809mm in width, 1653mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2585mm, the Chinese-made ZST is designed to cater to the needs of urban families and individuals who require a compact yet spacious vehicle on a budget.

2024 MG ZST Essence: How much does it cost?
MG has employed an aggressive pricing strategy with the 2024 ZST Essence, marking it down by approximately $3000 compared with the 2022-2023 model, to a very competitive $30,490 (excluding on-road costs). MG also offers the ZST in Core, Vibe and Excite trim levels, although, the Core and Vibe get a non-turbo engine.
The reduction is obviously aimed at capturing a larger chunk of the segment, and perhaps even other segments, as it is one of the most accessible options in its class. In fact, the base ZS Excite is the cheapest SUV on sale once you factor in on-road costs. It starts from $22,990 drive-away.
An additional $700 is required on the ZST Essence for metallic paint options such as Brighton Blue, Diamond Red, Horizon Orange (as pictured), or Sloane Silver. MG provides a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and capped-price servicing, which is required every 10,000km or annually, with service costs ranging from $265 to $547.
The next-gen MG ZS isn’t expected to arrive until at least very late this year, but more likely some time in the first half of 2025. MG Australia hasn’t officially confirmed any dates as yet. Design patents registered in Australia provide some indication of its design (below).
2024 MG ZST Essence: Interior & packaging
The interior of the ZST Essence is a mixed bag of premium aspirations and budget-oriented realities. It features a 10.1-inch multimedia touch-screen with connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, helping to keep tech-savvy consumers happy. Some menus take a while to load and the flow is pretty crude. However, the surround-view camera system is a nice touch for this end of the market.
A full-grain leather steering wheel with contrasting stitching and synthetic leather seats enhance visual appeal. However, the quality of some materials, particularly the synthetic leather upholstery, may not meet the expectations of all buyers, feeling a bit less luxurious compared to more established competitors in the segment. But, you have to keep in mind that original sticker price.
In the Essence you get a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and manual passenger seat, offering decent comfort thanks to chunky side bolsters and a wide backrest. The seating position is high so you get a commanding view, but it’s not a completely natural alignment with the steering column in our opinion.
Rear seat space is very good for this class. In fact, it is one of the highlights of the ZS. There are no climate vents back here but there are two USB-C ports, and bottle holders in the doors. Unfortunately, there isn’t a flip-down centre armrest like in some rivals.
Up at the back the boot measures in at 359L. Again, that’s quite good for this class. It expands to 1295L when you fold down the rear seats. And, handily, they fold down completely flat. A space-saver spare wheel sits under the floor.
2024 MG ZST Essence: Powertrain & handling
In Australia the ZST Essence is powered by a buzzy 1.3-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine, producing 115kW and 230Nm. It’s coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive only – there is no AWD option.
While the engine delivers sufficient power for city driving, it lacks the zest and responsiveness that enthusiastic drivers might look for. But it produces an interesting and lively note that makes it fun to drive. We timed 0-100km/h in a respectable 9.78 seconds.
The handling is best described as wobbly but comfortable. At the back the torsion-beam setup sometimes skips over bumps, reducing control or the perception of control, while the MacPherson strut front end remains planted and reassuring. The tuning is on the soft side, which is great for city driving, but there are some more compliant rivals out there if you regularly drive in the country or on poorly-maintained roads.
Road holding grip is good though, as MG has been smart to fit quality Michelin Primacy tyres as standard. These measure 215/55, which is a good balance between width and sidewall comfort.
You get three steering modes to choose from – Normal, Dynamic, and Urban – but these settings often feel gimmicky, offering little in the way of genuine mechanical alteration. They simply change the level of EPS assistance (electric power steering). Steering feedback is vague, akin to navigating on sand.
Fuel efficiency stands at 7.1L/100km on the combined cycle. With its 45L fuel tank, the theoretical average range is 634km. In the real world we averaged 8.2L/100km. That’s not particularly impressive for this class, but once again, factor in that original starting price and the difference could pay itself off after some time.
2024 MG ZST Essence: Key attractions/reasons to buy
- Very attractive pricing: With a significant price reduction, the ZST Essence is positioned as one of the most affordable compact SUVs on sale.
- Extensive warranty and service package: The seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty and capped-price servicing should make it economically sound over the long term.
- Feature-rich interior: Equipped with advanced connectivity options, comfort features, and safety technologies, it offers a lot for its price.
- Large cabin: Rear seat legroom and boot space are near the top of the class.
2024 MG ZST Essence: Key considerations before you buy
- Quality: The use of lower-quality synthetic leather and other interior materials might not meet the expectations of all consumers.
- Bland steering and wobbly handling: While comfortable most of the time, the vehicle’s driving dynamics do not engage the driver as much as some rivals, and the suspension often has a hard time managing rough country roads.

How does it rate against its rivals?
Final word
The 2024 MG ZST Essence presents itself as a value proposition that’s hard to ignore, especially with features like a panoramic sunroof and a full digital instrument cluster that enhance its appeal. However, it positions itself as a practical choice for budget-focused buyers, but for those valuing driving dynamics and touch-screen refinement, it might fall short compared with some (more expensive) rivals. The four-star ANCAP rating is also something to consider.
