2025 GWM Cannon arrives in Australia in February, gets 2.4L engine

GWM is getting ready to launch its new, 2025 Cannon ute in February. It promises to enhance the Cannon’s appeal with improved performance, increased capability, and refreshed styling tailored to Australian customers.

A key highlight of the 2025 model is the introduction of a more powerful 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, delivering 135kW and 480Nm. This is the same unit as seen in the bigger Cannon Alpha ute, and comes matched with a nine-speed transmission.

GWM says this setup, replacing the lackluster 120kW/400Nm 2.0TD in the outgoing model, is designed to offer improved efficiency and better performance. Even so, it will remain as one of the lower-output utes in its class.

Towing capability has also received a boost, with the braked towing rating increased from 3200kg to a class-matching 3500kg. GWM engineers prioritised this upgrade to meet the needs of Australian consumers who rely on their utes for heavy-duty tasks.

In terms of design, the 2025 Cannon features a sleeker exterior with reduced chrome accents and bold embossed GWM branding on the tailgate, giving it a more dynamic and refined look. Inside, the cabin benefits from “premium materials, advanced technology and enhanced comfort features”.

The new model is expected to be quite a popular one, given the current version is already selling in decent numbers. According to VFACTS figures, the Cannon Ute was the ninth best-selling ute in Australia in 2024. Steve Maciver, head of marketing and communications for GWM, said:

“With almost one in five vehicles sold in 2024 being a ute, it’s vital for GWM to stay ahead in innovation and technology while meeting the evolving needs of our customers.”

Full pricing and specs will be announced closer to the launch in just a few weeks.
