MG has unveiled its updated MG4 EV range at the 2026 Melbourne Motor Show, with the revised rear-wheel drive Essence 64 priced from $39,990 drive-away and the all-wheel drive XPower from just $47,990 drive-away.
The MY26 update appears to be more than a mild tidy-up. MG says the new MG4 brings a broader tech and cabin upgrade while retaining the core traits that made the original such a strong package in Australia (it was once the most popular car in its class); sharp dynamics, rear-drive balance in regular form, and proper hot-hatch punch in XPower guise.

The Essence 64 continues as the more affordable driver-focused option, using a 64kWh LFP battery and a 140kW/350Nm electric motor. MG says WLTP driving range has increased to 452km, while DC fast-charging from 10-80 per cent can take 25 minutes.
At the top of the range, the MG4 XPower carries over as the performance flagship. It uses a 64kWh NCM battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive system, with combined outputs of 320kW and 600Nm. MG quotes 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds, with WLTP range rated at 405km.

Inside, the 2026 update adopts a more premium cabin design inspired by newer MG EVs, with upgraded materials, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, and a new 12.8-inch central touch-screen. MG has also responded to one of the bigger gripes with the old car by introducing more physical controls, including shortcut buttons and dials for functions such as climate and audio.
Other changes include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way driver’s seat, 360-degree camera, and 388 litres of boot space, expanding to 1164L with the rear seats folded.
The XPower remains the headline act. In our original Australian launch review, we described it as a genuine Subaru WRX STI/Mitsubishi Evo moment for the electric era. This update suggests MG is keen to keep that reputation intact.
