Looking to buy a new 7-seat SUV? Well, Tesla isn’t a good place to start as it doesn’t offer anything in that layout. But it has just announced a 6-seat option for the Model Y. So, that’s the next best thing, right?
While final specs and prices are yet to be finalised, Tesla is confirming today it is coming to Australia. It’ll be called the Model Y L, and it’ll feature three rows of two seats. So that’s two in the third row, two in the middle, and two in the front.

It’s the first time the Model Y is being offered with more than five seats in Australia, following the reveal of the new L model in China recently. Earlier reports found homologation details of the model in Australia, but now the company is officially confirming.
The Model Y L is bigger than the regular Model Y, adopting a longer wheelbase to accomodate the additional row of seats, and it’s slightly taller in height. Tesla says it is a ‘proper third row of seats” as well. It’s not yet know which variant/s will be available with the L 6-seat layout. Tesla said in a statement:
“At this time, Tesla Australia & New Zealand cannot confirm an arrival date, but seeking to clarify Model Y L will become available to customers looking for a 6 seat electric SUV this year.”
Production will take place at the Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, with all of its new vehicles now covered by a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty, as of the start of 2026. See below for the current pricing linuep (excluding on-roads):
