Tesla is finally launching a three-row-seat SUV in the form of the Model Y L in Australia. This is a long wheelbase version of the popular mid-sizer, based on the latest ‘Juniper’ generation.
The Tesla Model Y L is 177mm longer than the regular Model Y, and about 44mm taller. It’s actually more aerodynamic as well, with a drag coefficient of 0.216 compared with 0.22 in the regular model.

Strangely, the Model Y L isn’t a 7-seater. It’s actually a six-seat model, with two seats in each of the three rows. Much of that extra length is in the wheelbase (3040mm), which is extended by 150mm over the regular model.
Just one version is going on sale in Australia and it’s based on the Premium Long Range AWD. It features the same suspension set as the five-seat model but with continuous variable damping added in, with ‘Balanced’ and ‘Rear Comfort’ selectable modes.

Energy is sent to a twin-motor drive system that combines to produce 378kW and 590Nm, which is enough to propel the SUV from 0-100km/h in a claimed 5.0 seconds. The top speed is 201km/h. A full-charge range is stamped at 681km on the WLTP cycle and it supports 250kW charging.
Boot space is rated at 536L in total, with the rear seats up. Of that, 420L is in the back. Fold down the third row, which is done via a power-folding mechanism like the second row, and you’ve got 1076L of space. With both rear rows down the Model Y L presents 2423L in the back. And you still have 116L in the front boot to add.

Speaking of folding down the rear seats, the Camp Mode offers slightly more space with the L. Tesla says taller people will be able to stretch their legs thanks to the longer wheelbase and longer overall length.
Other accommodation highlights include heated seats for the third row, arm rests and cup holders, and ISOFIX points. The air-con system has also been beefed up, with vents in the B- and C-pillars to maintain comfort for all. There’s also two USB-C ports in the third row.

As standard the L comes with a 16-inch main touch-screen system with an 8.0-inch screen for the rear passengers, along with an 18-speaker sound system with sub-woofer, power front seats with heating and cooling for the first two rows, and a wireless charging pad with dedicated cooling.
In terms of the exterior, the Model Y L uses distinctive 19-inch ‘Machina 2.0’ alloy wheels with detachable aero covers, a rear spoiler inspired by the one on the Model Y Performance grade, while the ‘Y’ badge features two shadow lines to mark its identity. There’s also an exclusive Cosmic Silver paint option.
