Pricing and specifications for the third incarnation of the Audi Q5 and SQ5 medium and sports SUV have been announced for Australia, starting from $81,000 before on-roads.
Debuting on Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) rather than MLB evo like its predecessor, the conventional SUVs will be followed later in the year by their coupe-esque Sportback counterparts.
Opening the range, the Q5 TFSI features a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol with 48V mild-hybrid technology. It develops 150kW between 4300-6000rpm, and 340Nm from 2000-4000rpm. Officially quoted fuel consumption is 5.7L/100km, with a 0-100km/h claim of 8.6 seconds.
The TDI quattro adds all-wheel-drive and a turbo-diesel powertrain. Still of 2.0 litres capacity, it develops an identical 150kW of power, but a noticeably meatier 400Nm from 1750-3250rpm. It is quicker, too, with 0-100km/h claimed in 7.4 seconds. A new Q5 TDI quattro sport model adds 20-inch alloys, standard panoramic sunroof and S line interior appointments.
For real straight-line thrills, the SQ5 features a 3.0-litre TFSI V6, producing 270kW and 550Nm, lowering the 0-100km/h time to 4.7 seconds. A special ‘edition one’ model adds exclusive black 20-inch wheels (rather than the 21-inch items on the standard model), but misses out on adaptive damping and massaging, heated and vented seats but the impressive powertrain is the same. All models have a braked towing capacity of 2000kg.
To our eyes, the styling is a return to form for Audi, with striking and fresh contours and a return to a time when Audi had the best looking cars of the big three.
Internally, an 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit joins a 14.5-inch MMI infotainment screen with crisp graphics. Depending on model, a Digital Stage is also available for the front passenger.
