GWM Australia is bolstering its Tank 300 lineup for 2025 with the addition of a new turbo-diesel variant, as previously spied, delivering stronger towing capacity and improved efficiency over the existing petrol. Unfortunately, there is no mention of any updates to fix the potentially dangerous rear wheel-hopping situation during hard braking.
Available in two trims, Lux and Ultra, the new model features a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 135kW and 480Nm, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission with four-wheel drive. It offers a combined fuel consumption of 7.8L/100km, bettering the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol’s rating of 9.5L/100km.
The diesel variant also offers increased braked towing capacity to 3000kg. That’s 500kg more than the petrol and hybrid models. However, the figure is still down on the segment benchmark of 3500kg.
Both grades match the hybrid model’s specifications, including connected car capabilities, with a 12.3-inch touch-screen and matching digital gauge cluster. Steve Maciver, GWM’s head of marketing and communications, said:
“The introduction of the new Tank 300 diesel builds on the success of our rugged off-road range, offering customers a more powerful yet highly efficient powertrain option. With impressive towing capability, refined performance, and two well-equipped grades, this new variant reinforces our commitment to delivering versatile and capable vehicles.”
Like the rest of the range, the Tank 300 diesel is covered by GWM’s seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, along with a seven-year roadside assistance and capped-price servicing package. Customers who place an order in March 2025 will also receive three years of complimentary scheduled servicing. See below for the starting prices.
Sales of the Tank 300 have been mediocre in the first month of the year, with 243 new registrations, according to VFACTS figures. That’s down 38 per cent on January last year. During all of 2024, GWM sold 3968 Tank 300s, giving it 3.2 per cent market share. It was the 10th best-seller in a field of 24 models.
