GWM is getting ready to offer a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option for its Tank 300 in Australia, with the local arm confirming prices and specs ahead of its arrival in March.
The Tank 300 is known to be one of the most rugged off-road SUVs on the market, and so far it has been offered with turbo-petrol, turbo-diesel, and petrol hybrid powertrain options. But the lineup is about to expand with the Hi4-T.

Basically, the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid system that’s seen in the Cannon Alpha PHEV and Tank 500 PHEV, producing a combined 300kW and 750Nm. Yep, a serious amount of power and torque for an off-roader.
With a full 37.1kWh battery, the system can drive on electric power alone for an NEDC range of 115km, while the combined cycle fuel consumption is 1.9L/100km. It can also take in up to 50kW of DC power during recharging, with a 6kW vehicle-to-load plug on board.

Like its siblings, the Tank 300 PHEV uses a proper mechanical drivetrain incorporating a nine-speed automatic with a low-range transfer case, along with front, centre and rear diff locks available (only the Ultra gets the front lock as well).
GWM is launching two variant grades with the new powertrain, including the Lux and Ultra. All feature a surprisingly premium interior, twin screens on the dash, and a rugged interior design theme. GWM COO John Kett said:
“As demonstrated across our other PHEV variants, we remain committed to delivering vehicles where customers can benefit from strong EV-only range, fast charging, V2L and true mechanical 4×4 capability. As the New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES) are likely to change the Australian automotive landscape like never before, GWM stands ready to deliver more technology for less.”
The new option will be available from March, starting with the Ultra and then the Lux following in April. Drive-away pricing is being offered for a “limited time” during the launch period, starting from the following:
2026 GWM Tank 300 PHEV Lux: $55,990
2026 GWM Tank 300 PHEV Ultra: $59,990
