MG U9 EV specs confirmed for Australia; 3500kg towing, 0-100 5.8s

MG Motor Australia has revealed the full specs of its most ambitious local product to date, confirming Australia will serve as the global launch market for the all-new, all-electric MG U9 EV dual-cab ute.

Designed and tested specifically for Australian conditions, the MG U9 EV aims to bridge the gap between heavy-duty commercial capability and battery-electric performance, landing in local showrooms with the crucial 3500kg braked towing capacity demanded by the segment.

At the core of the MGU9 sits a massive 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, feeding a dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain. Total system output is rated at a formidable 325kW and 700Nm, allowing the lifestyle ute to dispatch the 0-100km/h sprint in just 5.8 seconds.

For regional and touring buyers, the enormous LFP battery yields a claimed WLTP driving range of 430km. When connected to a DC fast charger, the electrical architecture can accept speeds of up to 115kW (a bit slow by modern EV standards), allowing for a 20-80 per cent top-up in approximately 42 minutes. Standard 11kW AC charging is also supported for overnight garage or depot recharges.

To manage heavy loads and improve ride comfort over traditional leaf-sprung commercial vehicles, MG has equipped the MG U9 with a full-function electronic air suspension system at all four corners. While the 3500kg towing limit matches segment heavyweights like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, the ute’s sheer mass dictates a modest maximum payload capacity of 685kg.

Utility remains a strong focus, however, with the rear tub designed specifically to accommodate a standard Australian pallet. The removal of a combustion engine has also liberated a 236-litre ‘frunk’ beneath the bonnet, while a 6.6kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system allows owners to run heavy-duty power tools or camping equipment directly from an external CCS2 port, supplemented by three 2.2kW sockets inside the cabin.

Inside, the cabin leans heavily into passenger SUV comfort. The dashboard is dominated by dual 12.3-inch displays featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a wireless device charger, and an eight-speaker JBL audio system. The driver’s seat is heated, ventilated, and features massage functionality.

Safety is backed by a maximum five-star ANCAP rating, supported by a 360-degree camera system for precise parking and trailer docking.

While exact showroom arrival dates and final pricing are yet to be confirmed, this should be a fairly important one for not just MG, but the ute segment overall. See below for the key specs:
