2027 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 goes full electric, 500kW

Mercedes-AMG has officially unveiled the next-generation 2027 CLA 45, radically transforming the compact performance model from a turbocharged petrol vehicle into a 500kW all-electric powerhouse complete with simulated combustion theatrics.

The new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+ is built on an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, entirely discarding traditional internal combustion in favour of next-generation electrification. Propulsion is now handled by a highly sophisticated tri-motor setup featuring three lightweight axial-flux electric motors; one mounted on the front axle and two at the rear. This configuration delivers a staggering peak combined output of 500kW (671hp), drawing energy from a 94kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Out on the tarmac, the electric CLA 45 completely decimates its petrol-powered predecessor. The all-wheel drive sedan dispatches the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint in a blistering 2.7 seconds, eventually pushing on to an electronically governed top speed of 270km/h when equipped with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package. For direct comparison, the outgoing CLA 45 S utilised a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 310kW and 500Nm, requiring a full 4.0 seconds to reach 100km/h.

In a deliberate move to appease traditional enthusiasts mourning the loss of mechanical engineering, Mercedes-AMG has integrated a software simulation system. The vehicle artificially replicates the audible pops, bangs, and physical load variations of a conventional AMG transmission, pairing this sensory feedback with advanced torque vectoring across the rear axle.

In terms of practicality, the 800-volt system enables ultra-rapid DC fast-charging at up to 330kW, allowing the battery to replenish from 10 to 80 per cent in just 22 minutes under ideal conditions. Mercedes claims a WLTP-certified driving range of 670km, while a slightly heavier Shooting Brake wagon variant will offer up to 640km.

Local Australian launch timing and finalised domestic retail pricing for the new model have not yet been officially confirmed, though, it is expected to arrive here some time in 2027.
