The third generation Mercedes-Benz CLA has been revealed, with deliveries in Australia destined to start in the first half of 2026.
This new model represents a staggering leap forward, not only for the brand but for EVs in general, with a Geely-manufactured motor part of the powertrain options list.
Utilising a new 800V architecture, electric models consist of the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology. Both utilise an 85kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery (NMC), with an astonishing 320kW maximum DC charge rate as well as 11kW AC. WLTP range varies between 694-792km depending on model configuration.
The CLA 250+ spits out 200kW and 335Nm, for a 0-100km/h claim of 4.9 seconds, while the AWD flagship ups that to 260kW and 515Nm for a 4.9-second sprint. The kerb weight is 2055kg and 2135kg, respectively.
A mild-hybrid 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine will come with a 1.3kWh, 48V lithium-ion battery to augment the petrol motor, which will be offered in three nominal outputs; 100kW/200Nm, 120kW/250Nm and 140kW/300Nm. All will be hooked up to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and a 20kW integrated e-motor.
Dimensions are 4723mm long, 2021mm wide (including mirrors), 1468mm tall and a wheelbase of 2790mm – which means it has grown up in every direction except boot space, which is down to 405L from 460. A 101L ‘frunk’ more than compensates for this on pure EV models.
Styling, as previewed by the EQXX concept, is very aerodynamic, with light bars and many three-pointed-star motifs in the grille and LED front and rear lights. The drag coefficient is 0.21Cd on some models, which is class-leading, according to Mercedes-Benz.
An all-new interior incorporates a cavalcade of screens, spanning from the driver’s instrument panel to a passenger screen. The MBUX Superscreen combines a 10.25-inch instrument panel with a 14-inch infotainment screen and 14-inch passenger display with integrated media streaming and gaming apps.
What about AMG, you ask? The successor to the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC will be an EV with over 375kW and axial-flux electric motors, according to an Autocar report.
