2026 MG4 Urban confirmed for Australia, joins compact EV segment

MG Australia is getting prepared to launch a new entry point for its EV range with the launch of the MG4 Urban hatchback. An updated version of the rear-wheel-drive MG4 is also available in markets like the UK but hasn’t been announced for Australia at this stage.

The Urban variant joins the existing, runout MG4 lineup with two battery options. Buyers can choose between a 43kWh standard-range battery or a larger 54kWh pack, both paired with a front-wheel drive electric powertrain. The configuration differs from other MG4 grades already on sale in Australia, which typically use a rear-wheel drive layout.

MG says the model has been developed with urban commuting in mind, focusing on manageable dimensions, practical interior packaging and relatively fast charging capability. Using a DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.

Inside, the MG4 Urban can seat four passengers. Boot capacity expands to more than 1300 litres with the rear seats folded, giving the small hatchback enough space for everyday errands or weekend use.

The new variant arrives at a time when electric vehicle demand in Australia continues to grow, particularly in metropolitan areas where shorter daily driving distances and access to charging infrastructure make EV ownership easier to manage.

Safety is a key part of the package, with MG equipping the Urban model with a suite of driver-assistance systems designed to help achieve a five-star safety rating – although not yet rated.

As with the rest of the brand’s local range, the MG4 EV Urban will be covered by MG’s 10-year warranty when serviced through the company’s national dealer network, which now includes more than 100 outlets across Australia.

More details such as specs and prices will be announced very soon. Overseas, the Urban produces 120kW with either battery, offering a range of 437km for the standard range and 530km (CLTC) for the larger battery.
