2026 MG HS Hybrid+ & Super Hybrid (PHEV) arrive in Australia

Pricing for the 2026 MG HS Hybrid+ and 2026 MG HS Super Hybrid has been revealed, giving MG a two-pronged assault on the hybrid and plug-in hybrid medium SUV market in Australia.

Starting with the Hybrid+, it is a conventional hybrid, sharing its 1.83kWh battery with the Hybrid+ variants of the ZS and MG3. Unlike those models, however, its 1.5-litre petrol engine features a turbocharger, hopefully eschewing the over-revving problem which afflicts MG’s smaller hybrids.

Developing 105kW and 230Nm, this Atkinson Cycle engine is optimised for hybrid efficiency and combines with a 146kW/340Nm electric motor to yield a 165kW/340Nm nominal output. Fuel consumption is 5.2L/100km on the ADR 82/01 test cycle – line-ball with its arch rival, Haval H6 Hybrid. Pricing is also comparable to the Chery Tiggo 7 SHS PHEV.

Pricing starts from $40,990 drive-away for the Excite model or $44,990 for the Essence, which adds panoramic moonroof, power tailgate, eight-speaker audio, wireless phone charging and PVC leather seats with electric adjustment and heating.

Those after the best PHEV medium SUV on sale in Australia now have another option to contend with, with the MG HS Super Hybrid. Marking the return of a plug-in variant of the HS, it features a 24.7kWh battery for a maximum electric-only range of 120km (WLTP).

This compares favourably with the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid’s 93km range, but trails the (sporty but flawed) GWM H6GT PHEV‘s 180km range. It wins some ground back with its 220kW/350Nm nominal output.

A maximum AC charging rate of 7.3kW means a four-hour recharging time when a 7kW wall box is used, otherwise it takes 7.3 hours through a standard 240V outlet. This puts the HS at a disadvantage compared with its two chief rivals, but, in its favour, the HS is the most polished and smoothest of the Chinese triumvirate.

The HS Super Hybrid starts from $50,990 drive-away for the Excite and $54,990 for the Essence. Both models are offered with up to 10 years/250,000km warranty when serviced at MG.
