How’s this for a cool retro throw-back. It’s called the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, and although it might not feature a mid-mounted turbo engine, it looks as cool as the original.
What makes this even more interesting is that it has just been confirmed for Australia. We usually miss out on special stuff like this. But Renault Australia says it has succeeded in negotiating with HQ and can confirm the new monster will be offered locally.
Powering the new model is a pair of electric motors, both feeding the rear axle. So, yes, it remains true to its heritage by being rear-wheel drive. Unlike the crazy hatchbacks made in the 1980s, the new 5 Turbo 3E belts out an impressive 500hp (373kW). This means 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.5 seconds.
That’s like supercar levels of performance. However, we think you’ll agree, the design of the new model is perhaps just as appealing. It is a faithful interpretation of the original, with a stubby rear end, side intakes behind the rear wheels (albeit not functional), and a chunky nose with small rectangular headlights.
It’s all built around a carbon fibre ’superstructure’ which should help to keep weight down. Figures for the production model are yet to be finalised for Australia, but Renault did unveil a concept version a couple of years ago that weighed 980kg, plus 520kg for the battery. Speaking about the new model, Renault Australia GM, Glen Sealey, said:
“We know Christmas Eve is not the ideal time to make a major announcement like this, but we know our fans have been waiting for this news and we wanted to share it with them as soon as possible. We got the green light for this car overnight and we are not waiting a moment to get things moving.”
Those interested can register their interest on a special Renault 5 Turbo webpage. Prices haven’t been confirmed yet, but the guess going around seems to be AU$200,000 or more. It’ll be the most expensive Renault ever, but also the most powerful and quickest ever officially offered in Australia. Build numbers and timing details are also yet to be finalised.
