2024 Toyota HiLux V-Active 48V mild-hybrid now on sale in Australia

The facelifted Toyota HiLux for 2024 has arrived in Australia, bringing in 48V mild-hybrid tech for the first time, called V-Active technology. Some revisions to styling and other bits and pieces are also introduced.

Firstly, the 48V mild-hybrid tech. It’s available as an option on the SR, SR5, and Rogue variants, in dual-cab form only. Full specifications are yet to be confirmed, but it does pair the existing 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine with a motor-generator assist system.

The motor-generator is fixed onto the engine via a dual-arm belt-tensioner, and produces 12kW and 65Nm alone. It can recuperate energy and store it in a battery located under the rear seat bench. The generator is able to assist with powertrain smoothness and lowers fuel consumption by 10 per cent, Toyota says.

A fuel economy figure is yet to be confirmed, but if we look at the regular setup, it consumes 7.9L/100km on the official cycle. Subtract 10 per cent from that and you’re left with 7.1L/100km. The technology also brings in a dual-mode stop-start system, with Normal and Long. The Long mode aims to keep the engine off for as long as possible, even with the air-conditioning on.

Power output remains the same, at 150kW, but the combined torque figure isn’t mentioned. It’s likely to be rated at the same 500Nm. Engine speed at idle is reduced from 720rpm to just 600rpm, which helps to improve quietness and economy.

Toyota says the 48V model retains the same “excellent” off-road capability as the regular HiLux, partly thanks to the way the motor-generator has been mounted high in the engine bay. There are also Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow modes available via the Multi-Terrain Select system.

Aside from the new hybrid tech, the 2024 facelift brings in a new-look front end, including revised front bumper bar and new honeycomb grille, fitted to all except the WorkMate and SR single-cab and petrol variants. SR5 models gain dark-style LED headlights, gloss black side mirrors and door handles, and a powder-coated sports bar.

All pickup-style (body tub) models get a tailgate damper system for softer opening (a gas strut and cable), with the SR double-cab auto adding front and rear parking sensors. The SR5 now comes with a wireless phone charger and two USB-C ports for the rear (as with Rogue and GR Sport).
