MG will soon launch its fresh MG4 low-slung EV in Australia, and prices have been confirmed to start from $47,990 before on-road costs. It is expected to be joined by a flagship dual-motor variant later down the track.
The first variant to arrive in Australia will be the base rear-wheel drive model called the Essence, featuring a single electric motor mounted at the rear axle. It receives power from a 64kWh battery that then feeds into the rear motor that develops up to 150kW.
MG promises a 50:50 weight distribution for balanced handling, while the rear-drive setup could bring some fun to the world of EVs. On a full charge the MG4 Essence offers an official range of 435km, and the battery can be recharged at up to 135kW using a DC fast charger.
Using a common 50kW charger, users can expect around 80 per cent battery from pretty much empty in around 60 minutes. If you find a faster charger and hit the maximum 135kW rate you could expect a similar range boost in about 30 minutes.
As standard the MG4 Essence will come with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED automatic headlights and taillights, twin rear spoilers, a two-tone roof colour scheme, and a healthy dose of safety features such as blind-spot detection, a 360-degree camera, and rear cross-traffic alert as standard.
The new model, built on MG’s fresh EV-dedicated Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), will also showcase “exceptional storage” and interior space, MG Pilot driving assistance, adaptive cruise control, and climate control.
MG says pre-orders for the MG4 are now open in Australia as of April 11 (today). As mentioned, prices start from $47,990 (before on-road costs).
