2027 BMW iX4 coupe SUV revealed, confirmed for Australia

BMW has revealed its new iX4 electric SUV – the coupe version of the iX3 – with two all-wheel drive variants confirmed for Australia to arrive in the first quarter of 2027. A more powerful M60 version will arrive later next year.

The new iX4 is the third model developed on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, bringing the company’s latest electric powertrain and charging technology to a coupe-style SUV. Two variants have been confirmed for Australia, with the iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive. Both feature dual electric motors and all-wheel drive.

The entry-level 40 xDrive produces 275kW and 520Nm, providing a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 200km/h. Driving range is rated at up to 638km on the WLTP cycle.

Stepping up to the 50 xDrive increases outputs to 345kW and 645Nm, reducing the 0-100km/h time to 4.9 seconds. Its maximum speed is 210km/h, while the claimed WLTP range extends to an impressive 828km.

Both models use BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, incorporating an 800V electrical system and new cylindrical battery cells. BMW says the latest setup provides around 30 per cent more driving range and 30 per cent faster charging than its previous-generation technology.

DC charging peaks at 300kW for the 40 xDrive and 400kW for the 50 xDrive, with both quoting a 10-80 per cent recharge time of approximately 21 minutes. Under ideal conditions, the 50 xDrive can also add up to 387km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. AC charging of up to 22kW is available, although the 40 xDrive lists 11kW as its standard AC charging rate.

The iX4 measures 4782mm long, 1895mm wide and 1595mm tall, with a 2897mm wheelbase. Boot capacity is 490 litres, expanding to 1600 litres with the rear seats folded, while an additional 58-litre storage compartment sits under the bonnet.

Inside, BMW introduces its latest Panoramic iDrive system, featuring a 17.9-inch central touch-screen running Operating System X. A windscreen-wide information display is accompanied by a 3D head-up display, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included.

The iX4 also features BMW’s new Heart of Joy vehicle control computer, which manages functions including power delivery, braking and energy recuperation. BMW claims regenerative braking can handle up to 98 per cent of everyday deceleration without engaging the conventional brakes.

Australian standard equipment includes the M Sport package, adaptive M suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, heated front and rear seats, electrically adjustable front seats, Harman Kardon audio and Parking Assistant Plus.

A higher-performance iX4 M60 xDrive is also confirmed for Australia later in 2027, bringing additional chassis and drivetrain upgrades. In the iX3 M60, the system produces 450kW and does 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds.

The new BMW iX4 will be manufactured in Hungary, with Australian customer deliveries scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. See below for the starting prices (excluding on-road costs):

2027 BMW iX4 40 xDrive: $103,900
