New MG city car concept to debut at Goodwood, ‘MG2’?

The Goodwood Festival of Speed has historically been reserved for the world’s most exotic, high-octane supercars, but this year, one of the interesting reveals is aimed straight at the everyday driver. MG is preparing to take the covers off a brand-new, fully electric compact hatchback concept. It’s set to preview a production model expected to arrive in showrooms in 2027.

Slated to make its global debut on July 9, the yet-to-be-named concept will serve as a direct preview of a new compact car to slot beneath the MG4 Urban. Widely tipped to carry the ‘MG2’ badge, the B-segment hatchback is being engineered to directly rival compact electric vehicles like the Renault 5 E-Tech, Volkswagen ID. Polo, and the MINI Cooper Electric.

Underneath the fresh, rounded design language – which deliberately steps away from the sharp, aggressive lines of the current MG4 – the new model will utilise the brand’s existing Modular Scalable Platform. This shared architecture means the compact hatch will likely retain a highly engaging rear-wheel drive layout.

According to MG management, the strategic focus for the upcoming hatch is heavily weighted toward delivering superior value rather than simply stripping out features to hit the absolute lowest price point. By leveraging the packaging efficiencies of a dedicated electric platform, MG intends to offer a larger, more comprehensively equipped vehicle for the price of a smaller class competitor.

This mirrors the successful showroom strategy used by the MG ZS, which effectively offers buyers a mid-size SUV footprint for light SUV money. So far, only these teaser images have been released.

The MG 2 won’t be the only reveal at the iconic Goodwood estate. MG’s global design vice president, Jozef Kaban, is also scheduled to pull the covers off a second concept vehicle. Currently described strictly as an “electric design vision”, this secondary debut will apparently preview an aspirational, higher-tier model designed to further stretch the brand’s premium ambitions.

While the prospect of an MG 2 hitting Australian shores remains unconfirmed, an aggressively priced, rear-wheel drive electric city car could be the perfect package for local motorists.
