MG has used the 2026 Melbourne Motor Show to reveal a new electric ute for the updated range, with the U9 EV, alongside a dark-themed U9 Black Edition. While the pair stop short of a full market launch, they give the clearest indication yet of where MG wants to take its dual-cab lineup in Australia.
The bigger news is the U9 EV, which will give MG an entry into the still-small but increasingly important electric ute space. MG hasn’t published local battery or charging figures yet, but the vehicle is closely related to the LDV/Maxus eTerron 9 sold in overseas markets.

In that form, it uses a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivers up to 430km of range on the WLTC cycle, and produces 325kW and 700Nm from a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup. Overseas specs also point to DC charging from 20 to 80 per cent in 0.7 hours.
Australian approval details reported in March suggest the local U9 EV will arrive with a 325kW dual-motor layout, a 3500kg braked towing capacity and 685kg payload, which would make it one of the more serious battery-electric ute offerings yet announced for this market. That matters, because most EV utes shown so far have either missed the towing brief or landed with compromises too obvious for mainstream dual-cab buyers.

Alongside it, the U9 Black Edition appears to be a styling-led take on the diesel-powered model, swapping some of the standard U9’s brighter/chrome detailing for a more subdued, blacked-out look.
MG hasn’t announced pricing or timing for either variant yet, though the current diesel U9 range is priced between $52,990 and $60,990 drive-away, as context.
