Isuzu unveils new 500Nm 2.2L Biturbo diesel, could replace 3.0L in Australia

Isuzu has unveiled a new 2.2-litre twin-turbo (Biturbo) diesel engine for the D-Max ute and MU-X SUV in Thailand, producing more power and torque than the familiar 4JJ 3.0-litre turbo-diesel currently offered in Australia.

Known as the 2.2 Ddi MAXFORCE Biturbo, the new engine develops 204hp (150kW) at 3600rpm and 500Nm between 1600rpm and 2600rpm, matching its key rival, the Toyota HiLux. That’s an increase of 10kW and 50Nm over the existing Australian-spec 3.0-litre unit, which produces 140kW and 450Nm.

Interestingly, the new engine could eventually replace the 3.0-litre in Australia, although Isuzu UTE Australia has not announced any plans as yet.

The new engine uses a two-stage turbocharging arrangement, combining a variable-geometry low-pressure turbo with a high-pressure turbo to improve response across the rev range.

Other technical developments include a 250MPa common-rail injection system with 10-hole injectors, revised engine cooling and lubrication, and low-friction pistons featuring a specialised coating.

According to Isuzu, the new engine delivers 5 per cent quicker 0-100km/h acceleration and a 12 per cent improvement in 80-100km/h acceleration compared with the 3.0-litre diesel. The company also claims an 8 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency under extra-urban driving conditions.

A recalibrated eight-speed automatic transmission accompanies the new engine, replacing the six-speed automatic used with the existing 3.0-litre in Australia. A six-speed manual transmission is also offered in selected Thai-market D-Max variants.

In Thailand, the 2.2-litre Biturbo is being introduced across selected D-Max grades, including the V-Cross 4×4, as well as the MU-X seven-seat SUV.

The updated D-Max V-Cross (similar to our X-Terrain) retains a conventional four-wheel drive system with selectable 2H, 4H and 4L modes, an electronic rear differential lock and Rough Terrain Mode.

Other changes for the Thai-market D-Max include revised exterior styling, new alloy wheel designs and updated equipment, depending on the variant.

The MU-X also receives styling revisions, including updated grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, with the flagship RS featuring a contrasting black roof and new Havasu Grey exterior finish.

The smaller 2.2-litre single-turbo MAXFORCE diesel, producing 120kW and 400Nm, remains available in Thailand, while the 3.0-litre diesel continues in selected D-Max variants.

For Australia, the introduction of the more powerful Biturbo engine could provide Isuzu with an opportunity to consolidate its diesel lineup around a smaller-capacity engine, while maintaining or improving performance and efficiency. However, Australian specifications, timing and pricing remain unknowns at this point.
