Mitsubishi has officially revealed the all-new 2027 Pajero, bringing the famous nameplate back with a ladder-frame chassis, 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine and seven-seat layout.
Production will take place in Thailand, with Australia confirmed among the first export markets alongside Japan. Mitsubishi says the new Pajero will arrive during its 2026 fiscal year, before expanding to around 100 markets from fiscal 2027.
Under the bonnet is a returned version of the Triton’s 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, producing 480Nm (up from 470Nm in the Triton), matched with a eight-speed automatic transmission. Mitsubishi hasn’t disclosed a power figure at this stage.
Importantly, the new Pajero remains a serious 4WD rather than moving to a car-based SUV platform. It uses a modified version of the Triton’s ladder-frame chassis with independent double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link live rear axle.
Super Select 4WD-II is retained, providing rear-wheel drive, full-time four-wheel drive, locked-centre 4WD and low-range locked-centre 4WD settings. Mitsubishi’s S-AWC vehicle dynamics system has also been added, incorporating Active Yaw Control, stability and traction control and ABS.
Seven terrain and drive modes will be available, including Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock, while braking hardware includes 18-inch rotors.
The new model measures 4920mm long, 1925mm wide and 1910mm tall, riding on a 2870mm wheelbase, making it a touch smaller than the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series. Ground clearance is 230mm, with a 30.4-degree approach angle, 22.6-degree breakover angle and 25.8-degree departure angle.
Despite the traditional 4WD hardware underneath, Mitsubishi has pushed the Pajero further upmarket inside. The seven-seat cabin features two 14.3-inch displays integrated into a single panel, while the digital instrument display can show altitude, compass direction, vehicle pitch and roll angles and S-AWC operation.
The second-row seats can slide through 150mm and tumble forward for third-row access, while Mitsubishi says the third row has been designed to accommodate adults. Three-zone climate control and ventilated seating will also be available.
Other available equipment includes a 12-speaker Yamaha audio system, and a 3D surround-view camera with an under-floor view designed to help drivers position the vehicle over difficult terrain.
Safety technology will consist of adaptive cruise control and lane centring through Mitsubishi’s MI-PILOT system, along with autonomous emergency braking, junction assistance, front cross-traffic alert and eight airbags.
The new model marks the return of the full-size Pajero after production of the fourth generation ended in 2021. The nameplate originally launched in 1982, with more than 3.29 million examples produced across its first four generations.
Australian pricing, final specifications and a more precise launch date for the new Mitsubishi Pajero are yet to be announced.
