Smart previews new #2 urban EV via Melbourne street art

Smart has launched an unconventional global marketing campaign ahead of the official October debut of its #2 electric vehicle, utilising street art to preview the production design of the urban two-seater. As part of a coordinated rollout across four continents, the manufacturer commissioned large-scale murals in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, and Melbourne, with further installations scheduled for Berlin and Paris.

The Melbourne mural, executed by local artist Georgia Laurie, serves as the most revealing look yet at the mass-produced iteration of the #2 and forms the focal point of the local teaser campaign. While previous spy photography captured heavily camouflaged prototypes riding on basic steel wheels, the Melbourne artwork confirms several key production specifications.

The vehicle adopts a floating contrast roof with blackened pillars, eight-spoke alloy wheels, and traditional physical door handles rather than flush-mounted electronic units. Also, the front fascia features rounded headlight clusters and a rectangular central air intake flanked by twin aerodynamic air curtains in the bumper.

According to Smart, the street-level campaign is designed to underscore the vehicle’s specific focus on urban mobility and its connection to inner-city culture. The #2 represents a return to the brand’s microcar origins following the recent launches of the significantly larger #1, #3, and #5 crossover and SUV models.

Underneath the exterior, which was styled entirely by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, the #2 is underpinned by the new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). This dedicated platform, engineered by joint-venture partner Geely, is designed specifically to package high-voltage battery hardware within an ultra-short wheelbase.

While exact battery capacities, kilowatt outputs, and kerb weights remain unconfirmed, the #2 is expected to prioritise manoeuvrability and urban efficiency over outright grand-touring range.

The production model Smart #2 will make its formal global debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. Following the international reveal, the manufacturer’s local distributor is expected to confirm whether the compact two-seater will join the broader Smart showroom lineup in Australia.
