New WRX STI destined for Tokyo Mobility Show in October?

Diehard Subaru performance enthusiasts have had a pretty rough time lately. While they may still have the WRX and BRZ, the halo WRX STI was pensioned off with the last generation. But could that be about to change?

An official teaser shows a top-down view of something vaguely WRX-shaped (albeit a hatchback) with wide haunches, cannards, a wide bodykit and some aggressive bonnet vents and scoops. The front valance looks beefed up for functional downforce and the presence of a crosshatch grille suggests this will not be another EV copout. Apparently, we’ll have to wait until the Tokyo Mobility Show in October to see what it is.

2025 Subaru WRX tS Spec B-dirt

Ever since the VB generation was launched in 2021, rumours about an STI version have popped up here and there, only for the brand to pour cold water on the idea whenever pressed. So far, the tS version is the closest we’ve come to a full-blown STI (above).

At present, the WRX’s 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer four-cylinder churns out 202kW and 350Nm. Last year, Driving Enthusiast tested a manual version, netting a 6.15-second 0-100km/h sprint.

If the STI does get revived, it is unclear whether or not the brand will add any form of hybridisation or copy Mercedes-AMG and BMW M performance with plug-in hybrid technology. We will bring you more news as it comes to hand.
