Lexus has unveiled the all-new, eighth-generation ES sedan for 2026 at the Shanghai Auto Show, previewing a new chapter in the brand’s electrification strategy and luxury design language.
A staple in the Lexus portfolio since 1990, the ES has been completely reimagined for its next generation. It rides on a revised TNGA GA-K platform that supports both hybrid and fully electric powertrains, and was developed at the brand’s new Shimoyama facility in Japan, with Lexus engineers and designers working together under one roof.
The new model brings with it a significant step forward in technology and refinement. A key highlight is the introduction of a world-first ‘Responsive Hidden Switches’ theme, which seamlessly blends into the cabin’s touchpoints and they only illuminate when needed. This is part of Lexus’s Sensory Concierge philosophy, which also includes new climate, fragrance, and lighting controls that adjust to occupants’ moods.
Design-wise, the ES adopts a more dynamic look inspired by the LF-ZC concept, with a sleek silhouette, lower stance, and tapered rear end helping to enhance both visual presence and aerodynamic efficiency. At the front, an evolution of the brand’s signature ‘Spindle’ integrates lighting and cooling elements, while new L-signature daytime running lamps enhance visibility and identity.
Inside, Lexus has focused on creating an open and relaxing cabin, incorporating slimline seats, a panoramic roof with auto-dimming capability, and a new suite of high-end features like ambient sound-linked lighting and a reclining rear-seat relaxation system. The driver interface includes a new 12.3-inch digital display and adopts the brand’s Tazuna layout for intuitive operation.
In terms of powertrains, the range now includes updated HEV options like the new 145kW ES 300h and 182kW ES 350h (both optional FWD and AWD), along with two new BEV variants; the 165kW ES 350e (FWD) and 252kW ES 500e (AWD). The latter incorporates Lexus’s advanced DIRECT4 torque control system for precise handling and traction. Battery range for the 350e is estimated at around 685km and 610km for the 500e.
Acceleration across 0-100km/h is claimed in 9.4 seconds for the base 145kW hybrid, then 7.8 seconds for the 350h hybrid, and 8.9 seconds for the 350e electric, and an impressive 5.9 seconds for the 500e electric.
Chassis improvements include a new multi-link rear suspension setup, Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS), and enhanced platform rigidity, all aimed at delivering sharp handling and smooth ride comfort.
The new ES also adopts the latest Lexus Safety System+, with expanded sensor coverage and functionality to better support drivers in complex traffic environments.
Australian specifications are yet to be confirmed, but Lexus has announced that both hybrid and battery-electric versions of the new ES will be introduced locally in 2026.
