2024 Chery Omoda E5 on sale in Australia from $42,990

There’s a new fully electric SUV hitting the market, called the Chery Omoda E5. It’s based on the Omoda 5 and Omoda 5 GT that launched in recent months.

Two variants are going on sale in Australia, including the BX and the EX. Both come with the same fully electric powertrain incorporating a 61.1kWh battery offering a WLTP range of 430km. Both feature front-wheel drive and offer 80kW DC charging or up to 9.9kW for AC three-phase.

In terms of driving functions, the Omoda E5 offers adjustable brake regeneration with three modes, as well as three driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport), and seperate modes for the steering feel for the electric power steering system. The towing capacity, if you’re wondering, is 750kg (unbraked trailer).

The front-mounted electric motor produces up to 150kW and 340Nm, which stacks up well against its nearest rivals, with the 0-100km/h sprint coming up in a claimed 7.6 seconds. We conducted some performance testing with the Vbox during the launch event – stay tuned for the full review and video, under embargo until September 12.

As you might have expected, Chery is offering generous features and luxuries for both variants, including dual-zone climate control, dual 12.3-inch digital screens across the dash, in-built sat-nav, digital radio, a 50W wireless charger, lots of USB-A and USB-C ports, and a Sony sound system (6 speakers for BX, 8 for EX).

Going for the EX adds power-adjustable and heated front seats, heated steering wheel, a power sunroof and acoustic glass, power tailgate, and gloss black window frames. There’s also a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel (instead of plastic in the BX).

In terms of boot space, the Omoda E5 offers 300 litres, or up to 1079L with the rear seats folded. Unlike some rivals, there is also some storage under the bonnet, adding 19L.

The Omoda E5 goes on sale in September, with prices starting from the following (excluding on-road costs):

2024 Chery Omoda E5 BX: $42,990
2024 Chery Omoda E5 EX: $45,990
