Chery Omoda E5 becomes cheapest electric SUV, price cut to $36,990

Chery Australia has announced an enticing “New Year bonus” on its Omoda E5 electric SUV, cutting the starting price by $6000. The adjustment brings the base BX variant down to $36,990, cementing its position as the cheapest electric SUV currently on sale in Australia.

This price reduction is available for a limited time, as is usually the case with these sudden price cuts for EVs. And this limited time is only until January 31, it seems, which obviously doesn’t give buyers that much room to make a move. But it allows Chery to wear the ‘cheapest EV SUV’ crown for a period. Speaking about the deal, Lewis Lu, CEO of Chery Australia, said:

β€œWe’re dedicated to making electric vehicles accessible to more Australians, especially during these challenging economic times. This marks the start of an exciting year as we bolster our New Energy vehicle lineup with several new launches on the horizon.”

The Omoda E5 is the fully electric sister of the Omoda 5, featuring a 61.1kWh battery that provides a range of 430km (WLTP). Power is sent to a front-mounted electric motor that generates up to 150kW and 340Nm, which is enough to see 0-100km/h dusted off in a DE-tested 7.09 seconds (claim 7.6s).

Recharging is possible at up to 80kW, which is not the beefiest for its class. But the battery isn’t super-size, so going from 30-80 per cent charge takes only 30 minutes. A maximum AC three-phase rate of 9.9kW is marginally down on the industry standard 11kW.

The deal is available while stocks last, or until January 31, according to the official Chery Australia website.
