Mopar Australia has announced a limited release of two powerhouse crate engines, including the iconic 6.2-litre supercharged Hellcat ‘Hellcrate’ V8 beast. The 6.4L 392 crate HEMI V8 is also being offered.
If you’re in the process of building a street machine or perhaps you’ve got a rolling shell and you’ve been undecided on the powerplant, this could be a good opportunity to snag a brand new thumping V8 right from the factory it was designed.
Engines like these, in terms of being new from the factory, are on their last legs as emissions laws get tighter and tighter. Although Mopar has been offering the supercharged 6.2 and the 6.4 HEMI in America for a while now, this is the first time they are being officially offered in Australia.
The highlight is undoubtedly the 6.2 Hellcat V8. A beast of an engine first seen in the Dodge Charger and Challenger overseas, it belted out over 700hp when it debuted in 2015. In Australia it has only ever been offered with the Jeep Grand Cherokee in the Trackhawk.
With a staggering 527kW, this engine is one of the most powerful non-hybrid V8s ever offered in a production car in Australia and overseas (although it is available in a higher state of tune overseas). As a crate engine, it’s priced from $29,000 plus GST. For those seeking the ultimate in bragging rights at the pub, it could be a worthwhile investment.
Not to be overshadowed, the 6.4L naturally aspirated (392 cubic inch) HEMI V8 is an awesome package as well. It offers a deep and bellowing note, distinctive against any Chev or Ford V8, and it produces a healthy 361kW and 644Nm in standard trim sitting on the pallet.
This engine is sourced from the Grand Cherokee SRT but has been available in the Chrysler 300 as well. It’s designed to deliver robust power for motorsport and off-road applications, and is priced from a more tempting $16,000 (plus GST).
Both engines come as complete units, including a water pump, sump, intake manifold with throttle body, fuel injectors, and coil packs, ensuring a ready-to-install package for enthusiasts and muscle car fans.
