The edgy new 2024 BMW X2 has landed in Australia, bringing in a new iX2 fully electric variant for the first time and a powerful M35i performance model.
An impressive four models are going on sale, from the xDrive20i and M35i petrol variants, to the xDrive20 and xDrive30 fully electric models. Power peaks at 150kW and 233kW for the turbocharged petrols, and 150kW and 230kW for the EVs.
Surprisingly, the quickest model is not the EV. It’s the M35i. Equipped with all-wheel drive, as with the complete range, this little SUV can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.4 seconds. The iX2 xDrive30 does it in 5.6 seconds and the xDrive20i petrol does it in 7.4. The slowest model is the iX2 xDrive20, crossing the line in 8.6 seconds – which is still quite brisk.
Going for the EVs, you get either 455km of range for the 20 or 395km for the 30. Meanwhile, fuel economy is stamped at 7.8L/100km for the M35i and 7.5L/100km for the 20i – you might as well treat yourself if you’re considering the 20i as the performance model drinks at a similar rate.
Compared with the outgoing generation, the 2024 X2 is 194mm longer, 21mm wider, and 64mm taller. This means more passenger space inside, and the boot grows to 560L/1470L for the petrol models, and 525L/1400L for the EVs. That’s up from 470L/1355L in the old sDrive18i, which is front-wheel drive.
As you may have noticed, the new model takes on BMW’s latest design language, with edgier contours, sharper corners, and, in the case of the M35i, more darkened highlights and big spoilers for that sportier look. Wheel sizes range from 19 inches to 20 inches, although, you can opt for 21-inch M light alloy items if you prefer.
Inside, you’ll find a 10.7-inch Live Cockpit Pro and a 10.25-inch curved display, both running on BMW’s OS 9.0 system. Dual-zone climate control, remote software updates, head-up display, and a digital key all come as standard on the 20i. There’s even adaptive M suspension as standard.
BMW X2 sales have obviously slackened off in recent times in preparation for this new model arriving. During all of 2023, BMW Australia sold 294 examples, according to VFACTS new vehicle registration figures, and that was down 53.2 per cent on 2022 efforts.
The new model is on sale now, however, the iX2 eDrive20 will launch later in the year. See below for the starting prices, and further below for highlight specs and features:
