Hot on the heels of surpassing 1000 sales of the Cupra Born fully electric RWD hatch in Australia, the local arm has confirmed the Born VZ hot hatch version is coming soon.
The Born is Cupra’s version of the Volkswagen ID.3, built on VW Group’s MEB platform. In Australia it comes in a single variant only, featuring a 77kWh battery that’s good for 511km range (NEDC).
Energy is sent to a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 170kW and 310Nm, which is a nice amount of grunt for a rear-wheel drive hatchback like this. As such, 0-100km/h is claimed in a very respectable 7.0 seconds – we’ve tested 6.87 seconds.
If that’s not sporty enough, the upcoming Born VZ might be just your thing. Aside from showcasing a range of sportier highlights inside and out, the VZ is boosted to 240kW and 545Nm, which is enough to slash the 0-100km/h time down to 5.7 seconds.
Since the brand was introduced in Australia just a couple of years ago, it has become a reasonably popular brand for something with a niche focus, selling more than 5000 vehicles. And now this week, sales of the Born specifically have passed 1000 units. Cupra Australia director, Ben Wilks, said:
“Cupra is a growing brand with no ambition to be a volume player – loved by a few rather than liked by many is our mantra. Cupra’s journey in this country to date proves that Australians have a taste for the new and the progressive, especially in the form of a brand that emphasises design and driving dynamics.”
The Born VZ is scheduled to arrive in Australia early in 2025. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but as a guide, the current Born retails from $59,990 – the VZ will be higher than that.
