Volkswagen has showcased a high-performance electric sports sedan concept in the form of the ID.X Performance at an event in Locarno, Switzerland.
Based on the ID.7 large sedan, the ID.X Performance sits atop Volkswagen’s MEB modular electric architecture and boasts 411kW, with electric drive sent to all four wheels.
The sedan is adorned with carbon fibre for the rear wing, diffuser and side skirts, featuring a red accent line surrounding the lower edge. Gold-painted 20-inch alloy wheels complete the menacing aesthetic.
Conceived to showcase the capabilities of Volkswagen’s existing MEB platform, the ID.X Performance features 60mm lower suspension, with increased toe-out by 80mm . It can also withstand up to 200kW of charging. The project was led by Andreas Reckwerth, head of technology office MEB, who proclaims:
“The MEB offers many fantastic possibilities for approaching vehicle development with a great deal of creativity. It was clear to us that we wanted to base our new show car on the ID.7 and that we would focus on enhancing the performance. In this way we can show what is possible.”
The MEB architecture was introduced with the debut of the VW ID.3 in 2019, and also underpins the Kombi-inspired ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo. It will be superseded by the SSP platform in 2026, but there are rumours of Volkswagen scrambling to find a collaborator to help get the more sophisticated architecture to market faster – more than likely from China.
