Today has been a double treat for those awaiting the successor of the MG 3 light hatchback for 2024-2025, following spy shots of a prototype confirming the new model surfacing earlier today.
Since then, patent images that Auto Week seems to have found, also surfacing on Facebook, reveal the form factor of the new car in its entirety – albeit without details such as headlamp and taillamp clusters.
The patent images confirm a front end treatment combining elements of the MG 4 (such as the badge on the bonnet and headlight shape) and the MG 5 (grille location, shape).
Overall the car appears to be far more rounded than the outgoing model, with Ford Fiesta-esque rear lights, that are now oriented horizontally. Also a bit like the Audi A3.
According to a source on MG Australasia Facebook group, the vehicle will now be based on the same platform as the upcoming MG 5. The benefits to this switch would include the ability to incorporate safety features which are currently lacking on the 2023 MG 3 such as AEB and other ADAS systems.
Switching platforms could also see an increase in width and the ability for SAIC Motor to build the cars on the same production line. Other noteworthy differences include a five-stud pattern on the wheels, rather than the four of today, which could result in superior high speed handling and load capablity.
The post on Facebook goes on to suggest the car will be available with CVT and DCT options, which suggests the same powertrain options as the MG 5 Vibe and Essence. The former is powered by an 84kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder with a CVT, while the Essence borrows the HS’s 119kW, 1.5-litre turbo and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. If this is true, then we will get the hot hatch MG 3 we have been wanting all along.
Using an existing platform would shorten the development time of the MG 3, which could reach Australia before the end of next year. Given that the MG 5 Vibe is priced from $24,990 drive-away, we would expect the MG 3 to retain its value mantle and start in the low 20s.
It’s worth noting that the price for a base MG 3 Core has crept up from $16,990 to $19,990 in the last three years, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect the new model to be in the neighbourhood of $20-22,000. For the latest news, keep your browser locked to Driving Enthusiast.
