2024 Toyota HiLux mild-hybrid confirmed for Australia

First diesel ute in its class with 48-volt electrified tech

Toyota has confirmed it is going to introduce a (mild) hybrid version of the HiLux in 2024. This is part of the auto giant’s plans to expand electrification options to include all core models by around 2025.

In 2017 Toyota said, going forward, it will not be developing models without an electrified version. And that by around 2030, it aims to achieve annual sales of more than 5.5 million electrified vehicles. The HiLux is an extremely popular model, so, having an electrified version will no doubt help it reach that goal.

The system is what’s more commonly known as a mild-hybrid system, using a “small” electric motor-generator, similar to what other manufacturers offer with a starter-generator. Toyota claims a 10 per cent improvement in fuel economy over the existing 2.8 HiLux.

In SR5 form with the six-speed auto, the existing HiLux is officially rated at 7.9L/100km. A 10 per cent cut means we can expect a consumption rate of around 7.1L/100km for that variant. That’s not a huge difference, obviously, but keep in mind this is just a mild-hybrid system. As reported a couple of weeks ago, a full hybrid HiLux is not expected until the next-generation, in around 3-4 years.

What are the specifications for the 2024 Toyota HiLux mild-hybrid? We don’t know all that much yet, unfortunately. Toyota confirms it will comprise of a 48-volt electric system, offering a stop-start mechanism and improved fuel economy.

Aside from the main efficiency benefits, Toyota also promises “improved driveability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness” with the 48V system. It will be attached to the current 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder, matched with a six-speed auto.

In a statement, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations, Sean Hanley, said the new technology will help reduce on-going costs for customers as well as reduce emissions. Hanley also said:

“This new technology will not only improve fuel consumption, but customers will also benefit from enhanced on and off-road performance, making the HiLux even more appealing for a weekend away or longer term excursion into the outback.”

The 2024 Toyota HiLux mild-hybrid will offer the same maximum towing rating of 3500kg as existing models, and the system will be introduced first on the SR5 4×4 and Rogue models, and as an option on the SR 4×4 dual-cab.

More details will be announced closer to its launch in the first half of next year.

I like to think that I'm a car fanatic, but more of a driving fanatic. There's nothing better than getting out onto the open road, almost regardless of the car, and enjoying dancing with the controls and gathering up the moving scenery. If I'm not driving I'm either at the gym or sinking a few beers with friends.
