2024 Lexus LM to debut at Shanghai Auto show – a chance for Australia?

Lexus has confirmed it is going to unveil its new 2024 Lexus LM at the upcoming 2023 Auto Shanghai event in China this week. It will be the company’s new MPV/people-mover.

Only a single teaser image has been sent out with the confirmation (above). It shows what looks to be the rear D-pillar. The new model is expected to be a second-generation version, following up on the original model based on the Toyota Alphard (pictured below).

The Lexus LM is basically a luxurious people-mover van, perfect for VIP transport services or large families that enjoy uber-luxury motoring. The new model might jump further away from the Toyota Alphard this time around, although no confirmation has been made.

In the teaser image we can see the rear quarter window is a bit smaller and sharper, with a similarly revised D-pillar to support the altered window shape. Aside from that, the direction is difficult to predict. In a press statement last week, Lexus Australia said:

“Lexus will stage the world premiere of the all-new LM, its latest L-series flagship, at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition on Tuesday 18 April. In advance of the unveiling of this stunning new vehicle for connoisseurs of true luxury, Lexus has released a teaser image showing some of the unique design elements.”

As a guide, the outgoing Lexus LM was first introduced in 2019, also at the Shanghai motor show. It has never been officially offered in Australia, but it could be optioned with either seven seats or a more pampering four-seat configuration.

Power came from a 2.5-litre hybrid petrol four-cylinder, in the case of the LM 300h, or a 3.5-litre petrol V6 in the form of the LM 350. Details on the new powertrain options are yet to be revealed but we suspect the hybrid will carry over with minor changes.

The Lexus LM is set to be offered in Europe for the first with the 2024 model. It could be offered in Australia for the first time as well given the local arm is previewing it. However, more details are likely to be announced during its debut. The covers come off on April 18.

I like to think that I'm a car fanatic, but more of a driving fanatic. There's nothing better than getting out onto the open road, almost regardless of the car, and enjoying dancing with the controls and gathering up the moving scenery. If I'm not driving I'm either at the gym or sinking a few beers with friends.
