Volkswagen Australia has streamlined its small car range with the introduction of the 2019 Volkswagen Golf, trimming it down from 19 variants to 12. Which seems reasonable.
The range kicks off with the 2019 Volkswagen Golf 110TSI Trendline. It’s powered by a 1.4-litre turbo that kicks out 110kW and 250Nm, and is available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch auto. This is supported by the 110TSI Comfortline, featuring the same engine, as well as the 110TSI Highline.
Those looking to jump on board on the SUV/crossover bandwagon have the Golf Alltrack 132TSI and 132TSI Premium to check out. It comes with a 1.8-litre turbo that generates 132kW and 280Nm, which is then sent through to an all-wheel drive system via a six-speed dual-clutch auto.
For us driving enthusiasts VW is presenting the legendary Golf GTI. The 2019 model comes with a 2.0-litre turbo that develops an impressive 180kW and 370Nm, connected up to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto with front-wheel drive. It also comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, and GTI styling, among other things (check out the highlights at the bottom of this page).
At the top of the tree is the new 2019 Volkswagen Golf R. It turns up the heat even more, featuring a 2.0-litre turbo that barks out 213kW and 380Nm. This is sent through an all-wheel drive system via a dual-clutch automatic.
Volkswagen Australia is offering three different versions of the potent Golf R for the MY2019, including the regular hatch, wagon, and a Golf R Special Edition. The special is featured in a unique turmeric yellow exterior colour, and comes with an Akrapovic exhaust, performance brakes, and unique 19-inch alloy wheels. Just 400 examples are up for grabs.
The new model comes at a critical time for the small car market, as Toyota has just launched the all-new Toyota Corolla, while Mazda is about the introduce the all-new Mazda3 which is set to come with a revolutionary new sparkless ignition engine called SkyActiv-X. Volkswagen Australia GM of product and marketing, Ben Wilks, rather boastfully spoke of the new model, saying:
“That the Golf remains the benchmark small car is reportorial fact. Customers agree with critics. More than 70 per cent of Golf sales are of variants priced at more than $30,000. The GTI and R continue to comprise some 25 per cent of all Golf sales.”
