2027 Honda Avancier hybrid SUV previewed, Subaru Outback rival

Honda has officially teased its upcoming Avancier. It will be a wagon-like crossover engineered specifically to challenge the long-standing dominance of the Subaru Outback. Slated for a global debut in 2027, the Avancier represents a strategic shift for the Japanese automaker, combining the low-slung, stretched proportions of a traditional station wagon with the elevated ride height and trail-ready capability of an adventure SUV.

While specific dimensions remain tightly under wraps, official teaser images reveal a clean, long-roof and sharper-edge silhouette that visually separates it from Honda’s current curvy yet edgy SUV lineup.

The Avancier will serve as the launchpad for the company’s next-generation hybrid architecture. This advanced powertrain development is part of a massive broader corporate rollout, with Honda confirming the Avancier will be the first of 15 next-generation hybrid models due on sale globally between 2027 and the end of March 2030.

Honda is leaning heavily into this electrified architecture for its next wave of utility vehicles, targeting 2.2 million annual hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales by the end of the decade.

The Avancier’s packaging suggests a focus on versatile, all-wheel drive touring rather than hardcore rock-crawling. Visually, the sleek profile is punctuated by contemporary design elements, including a full-width LED light bar spanning the tailgate.

When it arrives in Australia, the Avancier will enter an incredibly lucrative space. The Subaru Outback has long enjoyed a virtual monopoly in the high-riding wagon segment, leveraging its car-like dynamics, symmetrical all-wheel drive, and practical cargo capacity.

By equipping the Avancier with a highly efficient, next-generation hybrid powertrain and a rugged exterior treatment, Honda is positioning itself to aggressively steal market share from the Outback, while also presenting a sleeker alternative to traditional family SUVs like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Skoda Kodiaq.
