2027 BMW 3 Series (G50) previewed, 326kW ‘M350’ confirmed

BMW has released more details on the next-generation G50 3 Series for 2027, confirming the internal combustion engine (ICE) range will continue with four- and six-cylinder engines alongside the new electric i3.

The new 3 Series is now undergoing final chassis testing in southern France ahead of production commencing in the second half of 2026.

Sitting at the top of the petrol-powered range will be the new BMW M350 xDrive, replacing the current M340i as the performance flagship below the full M3.

It will continue with a 3.0-litre turbo inline-six engine with 48V mild-hybrid assistance, producing a combined 326kW and 580Nm. Drive is sent through an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW quotes a provisional 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds, with top speed limited to 250km/h.

Perhaps the most interesting addition is a new Drift Moment function. When activated through the central display, the system sends engine power entirely to the rear wheels, effectively turning the M350 into rear-wheel drive with the stability control switched off.

BMW says the feature will become available during 2027 and can also be added retrospectively to earlier-delivered cars via a remote software update.

Elsewhere, the new 3 Series adopts BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, closely linking it with the electric i3. The combustion and EV versions will share broadly similar proportions and interior architecture, including BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system and Operating System X.

Underneath, the new 3 Series retains a double-joint strut front suspension and five-link rear arrangement, but gains a longer wheelbase and wider tracks than the outgoing model.

BMW has also revised the steering ratio and braking system, while new lift-related dampers are standard. Adaptive suspension and Adaptive M Suspension will remain available, with optional 20-inch performance tyres measuring 245/35 at the front and 275/30 at the rear.

The M350 receives its own chassis calibration, additional body stiffening, Adaptive M Suspension, variable sport steering and an M Sport differential as standard. It will also showcase various subtle design enhancements.

BMW says development has focused heavily on steering precision, body control and ride comfort, with prototype testing carried out at Arjeplog in Sweden, the Nurburgring and the company’s Miramas proving ground in France.

Production of the new M350 xDrive is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with further market and pricing details still to come.
