Land Rover has used the 2026 Monterey Car Week to reveal the ultimate iteration of its iconic 4×4; the Defender Dakar. Positioned as a road-legal evolution of the victorious D7X-R competition truck that dominated the Stock class at Dakar Rally, this highly exclusive limited edition brings genuine rally-raid hardware to the street.
Underneath the widened carbon-fibre bodywork, the road-legal Dakar retains the competition vehicle’s core architecture and 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. Unshackled from stringent FIA rally air restrictors, the powertrain unleashes its full 626hp (467kW) and 750Nm of torque.
The chassis hardware is equally extreme. Standard air suspension is swapped for a rally-specification coil-spring setup featuring long-travel Bilstein Advanced Dampers. Power hits the dirt via massive 35-inch all-terrain tyres wrapped around forged 20-inch alloy wheels.
Most notably, the vehicle introduces a bespoke ‘Flight Mode’ to the traction management system. It’s an intelligent software explicitly designed to modulate mid-air torque and ensure smooth landings after high-speed jumps.
Visually, the Dakar is distinguished by a fixed metal roof, carbon-fibre bonnet and air intakes, extended riveted wheel arches, and roof-mounted LED light pods. Inside, the cabin abandons the standard family-friendly layout for a strict 2+2 configuration, featuring bespoke front race bucket seats, optional four-point harnesses, and rear stowage dedicated to housing race helmets.
Reservations for the Defender Dakar will open globally in early 2027. While local allocations and official Australian pricing remain unconfirmed, expect this rally-bred flagship to command a significant premium over the standard Defender OCTA, which currently opens from $291,542 (before on-road costs).
