Toyota Australia has confirmed its first-ever the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) RAV4 is set to arrive in showrooms in June this year, topped by a GR Sport AWD variant – the first GR Sport RAV4 to be offered in Australia.
The new powertrain is similar to the PHEV system seen in the Lexus NX 450h+, pairing a 2.5-litre petrol four-cylinder with an electric motor assist system. Both FWD and AWD options will be offered, with the FWD (XSE only) producing 201kW and the AWD, available in XSE and GR Sport, producing 227kW of combined power.

That makes the AWD PHEV the most powerful RAV4 ever offered in Australia, with overseas specs pointing to a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds in the case of the GR Sport AWD. That makes it the quickest RAV4 ever offered as well.
To support electric driving, the RAV4 PHEV uses a 22.7kWh battery (up from 18.1kWh in the Lexus NX) that offers an impressive electric range of 154km (NEDC) in the FWD, or 144km in the AWD models. The battery supports up to 11kW AC charging, or 50kW DC charging. Toyota Australia vice president of sales and marketing, John Pappas, said:
“For RAV4, we have already launched the extremely efficient all-new sixth-generation model in hybrid versions and the new PHEV models will provide greater performance for those who really enjoy their driving out on the open road, along with the ability to run on electric power alone for shorter trips around the city.”

Interestingly, the XSE PHEV comes with the same level of standard features as the XSE hybrid (interior shown above) but it adds larger disc brakes; an attention to detail often missed by some brands – it makes sense given this has more power than the regular hybrid. There’s also a 1500W on-board inverter and three-pin Aussie plug in the boot.
The GR Sport rides on sports suspension with a rear suspension brace added in, while showcasing a 20mm wider track for a sportier stance. It also shows off a unique bodykit, distinctive alloy wheels, and various interior trimmings to align it with the GR Sport family.
