Toyota Australia is expanding the new-generation RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid range, with a GXL 2WD PHEV set to join the lineup in the first quarter of 2027.
The new variant will sit below the existing XSE 2WD PHEV, providing a more accessible entry point into the plug-in hybrid range. It joins the XSE 2WD and AWD models and the flagship RAV4 GR Sport AWD PHEV introduced locally in July.
Power comes from the same setup used in the XSE 2WD PHEV, combining a 2.5-litre petrol engine with a 151.4kW/272Nm front electric motor. Total system output is rated at 201kW.
A 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery provides an impressive 121km of electric-only range on the WLTP cycle, with the charging system supporting up to 50kW DC or 11kW AC.
Equipment largely mirrors the regular GXL 2WD Hybrid (pictured), with highlights including 18-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, an eight-way powered driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers and smart entry and start.
Inside, there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and 10.5-inch central touch-screen running Toyota’s latest multimedia system, along with a wireless phone charger. Toyota’s latest Safety Sense driver-assistance package and Connected Services are also included.
Pricing for the GXL 2WD PHEV hasn’t been announced yet, although its positioning below the XSE should make it the cheapest plug-in RAV4 when it arrives.
Toyota is also making some changes elsewhere in the RAV4 range from the fourth quarter of 2026. Two-wheel drive Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid variants gain an expanded Drive Mode Select system, offering Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow and Custom settings.
AWD versions go a little further, picking up dedicated Rock & Dirt and Mud & Sand modes in place of the existing Trail/Snow functionality. These settings alter the traction control calibration to better suit loose or slippery surfaces.
With the GXL PHEV added, the Australian RAV4 range will grow to 12 variants, spanning front- and all-wheel drive, regular hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and multiple equipment grades.
The 2027 Toyota RAV4 GXL 2WD PHEV is scheduled to arrive during the first quarter of next year, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
