MG continues its aggressive saturation of the Australian electric vehicle market, officially dropping the all-new MGS6 mid-size fully electric SUV with a highly disruptive $49,990 drive-away starting price.
If this footprint feels like it’s filling a lingering gap in the lineup, that’s because it is. For years, local management teased the arrival of the HS-sized Marvel R, only for the right-hand drive program to quietly evaporate. The MGS6 effectively steps in to fulfil that broken promise, operating as a dedicated mid-size electric flagship in the exact same way the new MGS5 serves as the de facto successor to the aging ZS EV.
Launching immediately in two high-spec ‘Essence’ variants, the base RWD model puts 180kW to the tarmac and claims a highly respectable 530km of WLTP range. For those wanting more straight-line shove, the Essence AWD adds a front motor to deliver a combined 266kW. It drops the 0-100km/h sprint to a brisk 5.1 seconds, though the extra mass and performance take a toll on endurance, dropping the quoted range to 485km.
Beneath the sleek, European-style sheet metal, the MGS6 rides on a dedicated EV architecture featuring a multi-link rear end and a highly efficient heat pump as standard. However, the 144kW peak DC fast-charging capability is merely adequate by 2026 standards, demanding a 38-minute wait for a 10-80 per cent top-up.
Practicality remains solid for the segment, offering a 581-litre boot, 1500kg braked towing capacity, and a frunk (86 litres for the RWD, 67L for the AWD). The cabin aims straight for the premium segment, ditching cheap plastics for vegan leather, suede upholstery, and a heavy digital footprint highlighted by a 12.8-inch central touch-screen and head-up display.
