Toyota HiLux offered with genuine GVM upgrade, up to 1525kg payload

Toyota Australia has confirmed a new locally-developed gross vehicle mass (GVM) upgrade package for selected 2026 HiLux variants, aimed at boosting payload capacity while retaining full factory warranty and backing.

Due to arrive in August 2026, the factory-fitted option has been engineered by Toyota Australia and will be offered on a range of work-focused HiLux 4×4 models, including the WorkMate double cab-chassis and pickup, SR extra cab-chassis, SR cab-chassis and pickup, and SR5 double-cab pickup.

The upgrade lifts carrying capacity by between 372kg and 435kg, depending on the variant, with maximum payload figures reaching around 1525kg. Toyota says the package has been designed to appeal to both commercial operators and private owners needing greater load capability without turning to aftermarket modifications.

Unlike third-party GVM upgrades, Toyota’s in-house solution maintains the donor vehicle’s full factory warranty coverage and remains fully integrated with the ute’s safety systems.

The upgrade includes suspension revisions, including longer rear monotube dampers and an increased ride height by up to 10mm. Front axle load capacity rises by 100kg, while the rear axle gains an additional 280kg.

All upgraded models continue with Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 150kW and 500Nm, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission and dual-range part-time four-wheel drive system. SR and SR5 grades also feature the brand’s 48-volt ‘V-Active’ mild-hybrid technology.

The upgrade will retail from $4000. It is a factory-fit option and of course excludes the cost of the HiLux donor vehicle.
