2026 Mazda MX-5 update; new colour, Recaro seats, more safety

Mazda has announced a series of updates for the 2026 MX-5 range in Australia, introducing a new exterior colour, additional safety technology and upgraded interior appointments for the flagship GT RS variants.

The range continues to include both soft-top Roadster and retractable hardtop RF body styles, with eight variants overall, topping out with the RF GT RS.

Perhaps the most noticeable change is the introduction of Zinc Green Metallic. It’s a new paint finish available across both body styles, and marks the first time Mazda has offered a green exterior colour in Australia in 10 years.

Inspired by industrial zinc-based protective coatings, the new colour has been developed to appear relatively solid in darker conditions, while revealing a metallic finish under brighter lighting.

It joins six existing colours, including Aero Grey Metallic, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica, Machine Grey Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, and Soul Red Crystal Metallic.

Beyond the cosmetic changes, Mazda has expanded the MX-5’s safety equipment. The autonomous emergency braking system can now detect cyclists as well as pedestrians, while lane-keep assist has also been added across the range.

The biggest interior upgrade is reserved for the GT RS, which now comes standard with lightweight Recaro bucket seats upholstered in Nappa leather and Alcantara, featuring contrasting light grey stitching.

Additional Alcantara trim has also been applied to the dashboard, centre console, centre armrest lid and door panels, giving the flagship model a more distinctive cabin.

No mechanical changes have been announced, with the familiar G20 variants continuing across the Roadster and RF ranges. Manual and automatic transmissions remain available on selected grades, while the GT RS continues exclusively with a manual gearbox.

Power comes from a rev-happy naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 135kW and 205Nm. It might not seem like much, but keep in mind even in its heaviest form, the MX-5 is very light in weight; the GT RS RF weighs 1108kg.

The revised lineup is available to order now, with prices starting from the following (excluding on-road costs):

2026 G20 Roadster Manual: $44,590
2026 G20 Roadster GT Manual: $51,240
2026 G20 Roadster GT Automatic: $52,740
2026 G20 Roadster GT RS Manual: $57,240
2026 G20 RF GT Manual: $55,740
2026 G20 RF GT Automatic: $57,240
2026 G20 RF GT Black Roof Tan Leather Automatic: $58,260
