6-rotor Mazda MX-5 unveiled at 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon

The world might be moving towards electrification, but if events like Summernats and Tokyo Auto Salon are any indication, the tuner and modified car scenes are showing no signs of moving away from old-school tech.

Last year, ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett blew minds at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed with a billet-cased 20B three-rotor McLaren P1 drift car, which developed 1000hp (746kW). Now it’s his son, Lincoln’s turn with a 6-rotor ND MX-5.

Featured on Haltech’s social media pages for the Tokyo Auto Salon, the car features a custom blue paint job with light blue flames and sponsors such as Toyo tyres, NGK and Wisefab, with a PWR radiator poking out through the front.

There is no word on power figures, but naturally-aspirated six-rotor builds, such as the six-rotor Cosmo shown at Auto Salon in 2022, make around the 820hp (611kW) mark. The video shows a custom inlet manifold with six throttle bodies, and an absolute work of mechanical art with six Doritos propelling the roadster.

In the cabin, it’s all business, with a hydraulic e-brake and racing seats, sequential gear shifter and what appears to be a Haltech CAN keypad for boost and engine settings.

We’re sure we’ll see this beast hitting the track later this year. We’ll keep an eye out for any videos that pop up, as this should produce an insane soundtrack.Β The Tokyo Auto Salon ran between Friday January 10-12, 2025.
