Honda’s performance arm, HRC, has dropped fresh footage of its Civic Type R HRC Concept undergoing intensive testing at Suzuka, and it’s the clearest signal yet that we’re about to see a more hardcore, track-dedicated evolution of the FL5.
The video, shot mostly in the dead of night at Suzuka, moves past the initial static displays we saw at Tokyo earlier this year. This is the hardware in its element. We’re seeing more than just an aero package here; the HRC-tuned prototype is clearly running a revised suspension geometry and significantly higher-rate spring/damper packages than the standard road car.

The HRC Concept is effectively a rolling laboratory for Honda’s motorsport division. It ditches the road-going compromises in favour of a fully stripped interior, a motorsport-grade roll cage, and a heavy-duty aerodynamic overhaul that includes a much higher-drag rear wing and aggressive cooling ducts that fed directly into the front wheel arches/brakes.
The most interesting takeaway isn’t the visuals; it’s the intent. HRC is no longer keeping its hands off Honda’s volume-production performance models. By putting the Civic Type R through the wringer at Suzuka – a track notorious for exposing chassis balance and thermal management flaws – they are validating the engineering path for a raft of upcoming HRC Performance Parts.

While Honda continues to label this an “HRC Concept,” the level of component integration suggests we are looking at a future limited-run special edition, not just a parts catalogue teaser. It does appear to include an Akrapovic exhaust as well.
If the goal was to create a Civic that bridges the gap between the showroom and the Super Taikyu grid, they’ve hit the mark. We’ll keep a close eye on this, as it’s the most promising performance hardware to come out of Honda in years.
More details are expected to roll out very soon. Check out the teaser video below for a closer look.
