In a move to try and keep relative in an increasingly competitive premium SUV market, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled heavily updated versions of its GLE, GLE Coupe, and flagship GLS models. While technically a mid-cycle facelift, sweeping revisions have been made to powertrains and cabin technology.
Externally, the visual revisions are evolutionary yet impactful. The updated models feature redesigned front fascias with larger, optionally illuminated grilles, alongside revised front bumpers. Most notably, Mercedes-Benz has integrated its signature three-pointed star motifs into both the LED daytime running lights and the revised taillight clusters, bringing the SUVs into strict alignment with the brand’s latest global design language.
The most substantial engineering changes lie beneath the bonnet, where Mercedes has comprehensively revamped the global drivetrain range. The previous four-cylinder plug-in hybrid setups have been discarded in favour of smoother, more potent inline-six PHEV configurations.
Furthermore, the entire combustion engine lineup now benefits from an upgraded 48-volt mild-hybrid system, featuring a more powerful integrated starter-generator to improve low-end response and overall efficiency. At the top of the standard range, the GLE 580 and GLS 580 models receive a formidable new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 featuring a flat-plane crank for response and efficiency.
Inside, the SUVs transition to the manufacturer’s next-generation digital architecture. The cabin is now dominated by the striking new MBUX Superscreen (a continuous glass panel housing a trio of 12.3-inch displays). This system runs on the new MB.OS software, incorporating advanced AI functionalities and built-in Google services.
Addressing previous ergonomic criticisms, Mercedes-Benz has also introduced a newly designed steering wheel that replaces finicky capacitive touch pads with tactile physical rotary controllers.
Global production is slated to commence in the third quarter of this year. While Mercedes-Benz Australia is yet to officially confirm local pricing and specifications, we anticipate the updated GLE, GLE Coupe, and GLS ranges to arrive in Australian showrooms before the end of 2026.
