2026 Lexus IS revealed, sadly not for Australia

Lexus has pulled the covers off the latest-generation IS sedan, set to launch in global markets from early 2026. While discontinued in Australia, since 2021, the IS remains one of Lexus’s longest-running nameplates, having first launched in 1999 and since selling more than 1.3 million units worldwide.

The new model arrives with a sharpened focus on driving enjoyment, bringing in chassis and steering refinements and freshened-up styling, and more technology inside. But overall, Lexus engineers say the aim was to create a sedan that communicates more directly with its driver.

Development included testing at Toyota’s Shimoyama proving ground to fine-tune steering accuracy and stability. A revised electric power steering system now features a variable gear ratio and low-inertia motor, replacing the conventional coaxial rack, while new adaptive suspension is designed to smooth out road imperfections without compromising control.

Two variants will be offered initially; the IS 300h hybrid and IS 350 petrol. Full specs are yet to be confirmed but the IS 350 will be offered with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed auto, or AWD with a six-speed auto. As for the IS 300h hybrid, it continues with a CVT auto and RWD.

For the exterior, Lexus has given the sedan a lower, more planted front end and a wider stance, enhancing its sporty proportions. And then the F Sport pack adds new prototype 19-inch lightweight aluminium wheels, a redesigned rear spoiler, and the option of red brake calipers. Eight paint colours will be available as well, including a new Neutrino Grey finish.

Inside, Lexus has introduced a larger 12.3-inch multimedia screen and matching gauge cluster, while newly introduced Forged Bamboo trim provides a distinctive texture across the console and start button surround. A striking new interior theme called Prominence brings bold red tones inspired by solar flares.

Safety and convenience has taken a step forward, with expanded Lexus Safety System+ functions and the introduction of Advanced Drive; an assistance suite that can provide hands-off support in highway traffic conditions.

It’s a shame Australia won’t see the new IS, because it is one of the coolest modern sedan designs around we reckon. What do you think?
